Multiple, successful applicants in this recruitment, may be placed in a pool and moved into temporary openings as needed. If a permanent position becomes available within six months of interview selection, applicant may be moved into the position permanently.
JOB OVERVIEW – The Correctional Lieutenant performs administrative, field training, and security duties relative to the safety of the public, inmates, and staff members and the security and orderly operation of Montana State Prison.
Perform supervisory duties and completes appropriate personnel functions within the Security unit. Compose scheduling for correctional staff, assisting in scheduling for Correctional Sergeants, directly supervising all single man posts. Assist in supervision of all correctional officers, creating, developing, and maintaining Post Orders for single man posts throughout the institution. Ensure subordinates read, understand, and are familiar with the Post Orders of their position, Create, maintaining, and approve time sheets, as well as approving leave requests. Complete performance evaluations and conduct appraisal interviews. Ensure appropriate staff performance by modeling appropriate behavior, counseling, using progressive discipline, conducting administrative investigations, conducting and participating in employment suitability boards and panels and participating in recruitment, selections, and promotions. Perform administrative duties over the entire function of the institution in the absence of the Warden,Associate Wardens and Captains. Serve as a Duty Officer on a rotating basis.PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER INFORMATION
This position requires POST Basic Certification after attending training at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and successfully completing one year of employment with the Department of Corrections. In addition to the training and experience requirements, to be POST Certified, the successful candidate(s) must:
Be a citizen of the United States of America; Be at least 18 years of age; Be fingerprinted for a criminal history search; Not have been convicted of a crime for which s/he could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary; Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background screen; Be a high school graduate or issued a GED or its equivalent; AND, Possess or be eligible for a valid Montana driver’s license.REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS –

Tobacco Free - Use of all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco products and tobacco substitutes in Department of Corrections buildings, is prohibited.In secure care facilities possession of tobacco products is also prohibited.

QUALIFICATIONS –
Associate degree in criminal justice is required (Experience may be substituted for education at the rate of two years’ experience to one year education) OR Four years in a uniformed security position: correctional officer, sergeant, law enforcement, etc. Law enforcement / Corrections experience is preferred AND Two years supervisory experience required which may be included in prior stated experience requirement. Basic POST Certification is required, Intermediate POST obtained within one year.
