Duties

Major Duties:

Installs, maintains, and repairs facility infrastructures at the climbing high camps on Mount Rainier involving masonry, plumbing, painting, concrete, roofing, electrical, and heating systems knowledge, skills, and abilities. Installs, maintains, and repairs utility infrastructure systems at the climbing high camps on Mount Rainier including water melting and UV treatment and filtration systems, industrial scale solar-electric systems, and microwave and VHF radio communication systems. Manages the human waste management systems at the climbing high camps including the efficient operation of toilet facilities, collection, and removal/transportation to front country areas, and the final disposal of sewerage by septic pumping or incineration. Performs various other maintenance tasks throughout the park using Maintenance Mechanic skills including trail work, carpentry, operation of machines and equipment, usually at remote backcountry location, but also in the front country where needed. Uses mountaineering, skiing, and aviation skills and qualifications to access high camps and transport materials thereto and stand in as a first responder (EMT) to sick and injured climbers and backcountry users.

U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to obtain and maintain a US Recreational 2 or better Avalanche Certification within a year of entrance on duty. You will be required to obtain and maintain helicopter manager qualifications to effect flight operations within at least 3 years of entrance on duty. You will be required to lift at least 50 pounds. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You will be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime. If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You may need to obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do the Work of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Mountaineering Skills. (SCREEN OUT) Emergency Medical Services (EMT) certification. (SCREEN OUT) Helicopter Crewmember Training (HECM). (SCREEN OUT) Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc. Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, and Artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability to use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. Knowledge of Materials If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
