Deputy Attorneys General, with critical support from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure the public's access to open government, protect the abused, and much more.

Summary Statement

The Criminal Division seeks a Legal Assistant (Paralegal) to support Deputy Attorneys General in the Appeals Unit. While the Appeals Unit of the Criminal Division has state-wide responsibility, this position will be located in Kent County. Appeals’ Deputy Attorneys General are responsible for the appellate and other post-conviction litigation of criminal cases pending in both state and federal courts. These Deputy Attorneys General serve as the chief courtroom lawyers for the State before the state supreme court and federal appellate courts. These Deputy Attorneys General provide regular guidance and research assistance to trial attorneys in the Criminal Division regarding complex legal issues in criminal matters. The Appeals Unit is integral also in developing and providing professional development and legal training materials for Criminal Division personnel. This Legal Assistant will be an integral part of these efforts by preparing and filing legal documents, researching and writing, filing pleadings, motions, and discovery, in preparation for pre-trial, trial, and post-trial litigation matters. The Legal Assistant will assist the attorneys when preparing for and attending court hearings, and will prepare and maintain court scheduling lists and court dockets and other related duties as may be assigned. This Legal Assistant is required to have excellent research and writing skills and will be required to submit at least two writing samples.

Essential Functions

·Acts in liaison capacitybetween superior and various interested parties and judicial and/or courtstaff, clients, defendants, plaintiffs, victims, witnesses, law enforcementagents, elected and/or appointed officials and the public to gather, clarifyand provide information regarding case facts and status.

·Establishes and maintainscase files ensuring that the files contain complete and accurate informationessential to each step of the proceedings from pre-hearing and/or pre-trialthrough trial and sentencing.

·Interviews involvedparties such as clients, defendants, plaintiffs, victims, witnesses, arrestingofficers, or medical personnel to gather discovery material, evidence for casepreparation and to complete various legal and/or court documents.

·Reviews various reports aswell as other information such as police reports, medical reports, retail,surveillance, computer files/electronic documents, body worn camera and video/audio;summarizes pertinent details of the case for Deputy Attorney Generals; followsup as necessary for additional documents; drafts answers to litigationcomplaints and responses to form 30 interrogatories; issue subpoenas to obtainmedical, insurance, and employment records; serves and prepares discovery; andmakes required redactions for discovery and case preparation.

·Reviews law sources suchas case law, judicial decisions, statute law, codes, regulations, and legal andsubject matter articles to ensure issues are properly cited and providessuperior with written details of similar cases including findings, judicialdecisions, and memorandum/opinions of law.

·Prepares legal pleadings,e.g. briefs, motions, indictments, information and appeals. 

·Provides reports andrecommendations for new/revised operating policies/procedures.

·Reviews state and federalcodes, laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure complianceof legal actions/processes. 


Job Requirement Series

This class series uses three levels of work in the Administrative Services occupational group, Legal Services occupational series and describes legal assistant work involving administrative and judicial proceedings regarding civil, regulatory, and/or criminal law. Work involves providing an agency's management staff or professional legal staff of legal support work and trial preparation.
