SUMMARY:

Performs preventive maintenance and semi-skilled mechanical repairs of parts and equipment to return all River Authority Wastewater Plants and contracted plants to proper working order.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP), contract plants, equipment, and vehicles assigned to the Utilities Operations Division.
  • Cleans clarifiers, diffusers, bar screens, skimmers, walkways, and exposed metal and/or concrete surfaces of the sewage treatment plants.
  • Repacks and cleans pumps, maintains blowers, rotors, and performs any other maintenance activities associated with the proper operation and upkeep of sewage treatment plants with assistance if needed.
  • Removes stoppages and clears refuse from sewage treatment plants and on occasion might be required to assist in removing stoppages from sewage treatment plant outfall lines and collection systems.
  • Performs major routine maintenance checks with assistance on equipment and checks for the careful and proper use of equipment and materials provided for the work.
  • Monitors the proper operation of WWTP's equipment, reporting on operating conditions to Maintenance and Utilities Leadership.
  • Operates the crane truck and other large mechanical equipment as needed to perform maintenance and repairs.
  • Operates tractors, large cranes, power tools, gasoline mowers, and a variety of hand tools.
  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENT:

This position does not directly supervise any employees.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

A High School Diploma or G.E.D. and one (1) year progressively responsible experience in welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or equipment and facility maintenance; or a combination of experience and education that results in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is required.

Must obtain a Class "D" Wastewater Certificate within one (1) year of employment; Must have or obtain within one (1) year of employment and maintain a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement and an insurable driving record.

Qualified candidates that possess a valid Class "D" Wastewater Operator License or a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement at time of hire and have one (1) year of relevant experience, may qualify for Maintenance Operator II.

Qualified candidates that possess a valid Class "D" Wastewater Operator License and a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement at time of hire and have two (2) years of relevant experience, may qualify for Maintenance Operator III.

Qualified candidates that possess a valid Class "C" Wastewater Operator License and a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement at time of hire and have three (3) years of relevant experience, may qualify for Maintenance Operator IV.

Qualified candidates that possess a valid Class "B" Wastewater Operator License and a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement at time of hire and have five (5) years of relevant experience, may qualify for Maintenance Operator V.

*If selected, level will be determined by Manager based on internal assessment of education and experience.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

A thorough knowledge of principles and practices of preventive maintenance and repairs on WWTP's, equipment, and vehicles; good mechanical aptitude; the ability to pass a national agency check within six (6) months of employment for access to job related work on federal installations; the ability to properly fill out Department of Transportation log book; the ability to read and understand a Safety Data Sheet; the ability to swim; and computer proficiency in the current Microsoft Office package is required.

LANGUAGE AND REASONING SKILLS:

Ability to understand written or oral instructions; read, analyze and interpret documents, instruction manuals, policies, and procedures is essential. Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) are required to effectively present information in a one-on-one, small or large group setting. Strong interpersonal skills are essential to maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, agency representatives, civic groups, employees, and members of the general public. The ability to work effectively and efficiently, under sometimes stressful conditions, to ensure deadlines are met is essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Regularly and safely lifts, carries, and handles supplies and equipment weighing at least 60 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries up to 70 pounds approximately 15 feet. Work requires the ability to traverse uneven terrain, and intermittently walk, stand, climb, balance, bend, crouch and reach while performing work duties.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Works outdoors the majority of the time, sometimes in adverse weather, and is exposed to such typical hazards of outdoor work as poison ivy, wasps, snakes, and other natural and mechanical hazards.

The stress level for this position is low and the workload may require this position to work non-traditional hours including nights, weekends and holidays. Must be willing and available to work rotating on-call shifts. Must be able to perform in a small but highly professional team oriented environment.
