Job Description

Our Development & Permits department is seeking a Landscape Coordinator to ensure that proposed and existing development maintains compliance with the requirements of the Chesapeake Zoning Ordinance as it relates to landscaping and preservation of natural and planted vegetation (CZO section 19-600).

A successful candidate for this position will be able to do the following:

Review landscape design plans submitted to the Department as part of the site plan review process. Emphasis is placed on possible conflict between proposed and existing landscape material and the existing and planned infrastructure.Make recommendations for alternative measures for the preservation of natural vegetation and advise applicants on needed changes to meet the ordinance requirements.Understand and apply the provisions of the landscaping ordinance, and how the requirements are associated with storm water, and the Chesapeake Bay Preservation requirements. Assist other departments with landscape and reforestation needs.Provide inspections of landscaping and tree preservation activities to assure compliance with all applicable codes and ordinances and provide written notices on violations, citations and warnings. Follow up with appropriate action to gain compliance.Maintain, review and prepare logs, forms, reports, inspection results and other records within the current City data systems. Capable of manipulating, maintaining and responding to requests for service in the current City data systems.Provide exceptional internal and external customer service that meets the expectations of the City’s Customer Service Initiative. Applies customer service techniques, uses tact and maintains professionalism in all communications. Answers telephone, assists customers; and provides public with information and requirements. Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in horticulture, urban forestry, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards. Must obtain certification as International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist within eighteen months of employment. Special skills or equipment certification may be required. Preferred Qualifications Preferred qualifications include ISA certified Arborist and ISA certified tree risk professional.
