Job Description:
The Bronson Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (BADDL) and the Department of Comparative, Diagnostic, and Population Medicine (CDPM) at the University of Florida-College of Veterinary Medicine (UF-CVM) invite applications for a full time, Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Aquatic Diseases to serve as the Aquatic Disease Diagnosis Section Head at BADDL. This position is a multi-mission non-tenure track position in the Department of Comparative, Diagnostic, and Population Medicine (CDPM) that is promotable following UF and CVM guidelines.
The position will be headquartered in Kissimmee, Florida and will perform clinical (80%) and extension (20%) duties at the BADDL. The candidate will function primarily as a diagnostic pathologist at BADDL. The diagnostic caseload includes a variety of aquatic animals and USDA regulatory export testing of all sectors of aquaculture, including food fish, ornamental fish, shrimp, and bivalves. Interaction with veterinarians, and aquaculture owners and producers are an integral part of this position. Creative use of diagnostic case material including publication of results in appropriate journals is encouraged. Additionally, the candidate may have limited opportunities to teach DVM and/or graduate students or engage in research at UF-CVM depending on the candidate's qualifications and interests. University and public service through departmental, college and university committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate activities is expected.
Duties and Responsibilities
- The incumbent serves as Head of the Aquaculture Section and subject matter expert for aquaculture related questions from industry and veterinarians, with responsibility for overall supervision of the aquaculture section.
- Responsible for obtaining and maintaining USDA export certification and preparing the aquaculture section for the audits originating from USDA and other accrediting agencies.
- Discusses cases and animal disease-related scenarios with in-house pathologist, professional laboratory staff as well as NVSL and University pathologists to enhance the overall aquaculture services.
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers/clients, providing excellent veterinary-related technical and medical information, and returning all customer phone calls within 24 hours.
- Responsible for validation of all aquaculture tests offered by the section/bureau and maintains up to date technology for the tests offered.
- Ensures subordinates comply with federal and state laws and department/division policies and procedures related to personnel matters.
- Monitors inventory for supplies, equipment, and materials for supervised areas of operation. Ensures adequate supply of time sensitive materials and monitors expiration dates. Ensures that procurement orders are initiated in a timely manner to maintain adequate stock to prevent complete depletion. Ensures equipment and facilities are maintained in an orderly fashion and operated according to proper procedures. Provides a variety of assigned written reports. Maintains data and statistics for assigned areas in a contemporaneous fashion to ensure data is readily available when leadership requests are received
- Incumbent is required to participate in emergency planning and response exercises and prepare subordinates in the event of a potentially zoonotic or foreign animal disease outbreak. Incumbent follows all departmental, division and laboratory-specific safety protocols and methods and ensures subordinates adhere to standard operating procedures and plans specific to safety.
- Incumbent ensures section compliance with the laboratory and AAVLD 17025 Quality Assurance policies and procedures.
- Monitors work performance of subordinates, including periodic written evaluations and discussions; counseling to develop skills and correct deficiencies; recognizing employee accomplishments; and recommending timely disciplinary actions as needed. Approves timesheets and leave requests. Documents recommendations for special pay increases, reclassifications, and disciplinary actions, when appropriate. Efficiently carries out employee selection actions when vacancies are to be filled. Responsible and accountable for managing budget/dollars/resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner. Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with division and department policies and procedures.

Fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD), the BADDL provides quality diagnostic services for all animal species, including necropsy, bacteriology, serology, histopathology, virology, parasitology, and molecular diagnostics. As a national leader and the premier animal disease diagnostic laboratory in the state of Florida, it serves veterinarians, animal owners, livestock and poultry industry, educators and researchers to protect animal and human health. BADDL processes about 34,000 cases each year and conducts more than 80,000 tests annually.

Minimum Requirements:
Required qualifications for this position are a DVM or equivalent degree or PhD in a related discipline from an approved institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
ACVM or ACVP board eligibility or certification is preferred. Experience in aquaculture-related diseases is required. The ability to independently sign out cases is preferred. The position is a combination of clinical and extension services, but there may be opportunities for teaching and research at UF-CVM, depending on the qualifications and interests of the candidate. For those who are interested in research, the ability to establish an extramurally funded research program as demonstrated by previous or current funding is needed.
