Examples of Duties

Assists Aquatic Center Coordinator in planning, coordinating, supervising, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating the work of instructors, lifeguards, cashiers, and volunteers who provide or administer aquatic programs for the public.

Assists Coordinator in reviewing and preparing recommendations for new aquatic center policies and programs for the department; develops and recommends aquatic-specific recreation programming techniques, procedures, materials, and equipment; informs and instructs subordinates, volunteers, and participants concerning policies, procedures, and programs; and coordinates the implementation of approved community center programs.

Provides input for the preparation of the Center's annual budget and recommends budgets for specialized aquatic programs; assists in overseeing financial operations of a facility including accounting records and daily deposits; and complies with City and State ordinances governing financial operations.

Assists the Coordinator in organizing, staffing, and coordinating the activities of the Center's advisory council.

Develops and conducts surveys of parents, communities, and the public regarding aquatic programs and facility use; compiles data; and recommends new programs or revisions to existing programs based on survey results.

Assists Coordinator in preparing events and activities; plans, organizes, and coordinates special programming such as sports tournaments, holiday events and handicapped programs; evaluates aquatic program schedules; coordinates with other agencies to fulfill community needs and assures a variety of program offerings.

Assists the Coordinator in compiling statistical data and preparing reports on attendance, facility use, and budgeted expenditures; prepares timesheets and payroll records; and assists the Coordinator in preparing reports and records such as accident and vandalism reports, performance evaluation, material requests, and work orders.

Assists Coordinator in planning, designing, and coordinating the production of marketing tools such as brochures and flyers; prepares press releases and news articles for community papers; and prepares agendas and presentations for community meetings.

Trains, supervises, teaches staff and clients, and monitors the activities of swimmers at aquatic centers to ensure that policies, rules, and regulations are observed and no hazards to safety are created.

Inspects all safety, lifesaving, and rescue equipment; and inventories all first aid supplies to ensure equipment and supplies are sufficient to respond to emergency situations and equipment is properly placed.

Rescues swimmers in distress or in danger of drowning; and provides first aid as needed.

Assists in cleaning and maintaining the pool and related facilities; monitors facility filtration system, pool temperature, and chemical balance; and maintains skill levels and certification requirements by attending training programs and daily swimming.

Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has: Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Recreation Administration, Physical Education or a related field with one-year lifeguard experience as a qualified lifeguard, including some experience involving pool operation (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).License, Certification, and Other RequirementsAmerican Red Cross (ARC) approved certification for: Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Lifeguard; Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or equivalent (ARC WSI required to be completed within six months of hire if equivalent course is accepted at time of hire).

The Northwest Lifeguard Preparation Course and Test Certification (required to pass within three months of hire), and a current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility required.

Additional Information

Work Environment/Physical DemandsMay be required to work evenings or weekends. Required to work in hot, humid and noisy environments. Work may require contact with hostile program participants. Work requires occasional long periods of standing or walking. Frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds. Required to handle or work with toxic/hazardous substances. Required to swim 500 yards each workday. Required to act responsibly in life-threatening situations.
