Description: Job Summary
The Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases (IID) focuses on the biological, immunological, epidemiological and ecological aspects of viral, bacterial and protozoan diseases of animals and humans, including the vectors that transmit infectious agents. Research in the department's 14 laboratories is primarily focused on diseases of developing countries.
The Fortune Lab ) focuses on the molecular basis of population heterogeneity in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and the extent to which differences between mycobacterial cells contribute to differences in disease and treatment outcomes.
Position Description
We are seeking a motivated Research Assistant who is excited about working in an interdisciplinary team environment. Due to the cross-disciplinary nature of our lab, we are looking for a scientist who has experience in a wide variety of laboratory techniques and is eager to work with team members to expand their skill repertoire.
The responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Experimental Work:
- Growing and harvesting bacteria and cell cultures
- Maintenance of phage cultures for transfections
- Assisting with the design, synthesis, and sequencing of large oligonucleotide libraries for phage display
- Creating pipelines for automated high-throughput sample processing
- Isolate DNA/RNA and prepare samples for sequencing using established protocols and molecular biology lab techniques
- Implement quality control measures to assess the integrity and purity of DNA samples
- Operate instruments, including DNA sequencing instruments, flow cytometry instruments, liquid handling robots, and similar technologies
- Review sequencing output to confirm normal operation and valid results
Compliance and Documentation:
- Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and maintain compliance with relevant regulations and standards
- Creating and contributing to protocols and experimental design with minimal supervision
- Perform basic data analysis, including initial assessment of sequencing results and troubleshooting of any anomalies
- Document all experimental procedures, observations, and results accurately
Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate with other lab technicians, scientists, and researchers to achieve common research goals
- Assist with lab organization (ordering supplies, manage equipment, tracking reagent orders, preparing aliquots, etc.)
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of lab processes
- Any other functions or projects, as the needs and interests arise, as assigned by supervisor
PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term appointment of August 31, 2025 with the possibility of extension.
PLEASE NOTE: Scheduling flexibility, including some evening and weekend work, may be necessary.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of relevant experience; a combination of education and job experience may be considered
Additional Qualifications and Skills
The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in Biological sciences or related field
- 5+ years of experience in a research lab setting
- Previous experience with phage display libraries
- Previous experience with Illumina sequencing and analysis
- Passion for research
- Excellent written and oral communication
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Detailed oriented, highly organized, and works well independently and/or with a group
- Awareness of and aptitude to appropriately and effectively understand, respect, and adapt to cultural and identity-based difference within group environments
- Knowledge of and commitment to concepts and issues tied to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion
