Avalara is a leading provider of tax compliance software solutions for small, medium, and enterprise organizations. Most Avalara's customers access these solutions through a vast network of 1200+ integrations with commerce platforms (ERPs, Marketplaces, Billing & Invoicing software, e-commerce platforms). As a result, Avalara manages a global API portfolio that is consumed at an internet scale.
The next wave of Avalara's growth requires harnessing this platform's scope and scale to build a growing ecosystem of developers and partners who apply existing products and innovate new compliance solutions.
What You'll Need to be Successful
The Vice President of Product, Developer, and Partner platform will report to the Senior Vice President of Product. You will define this vision and lead a roadmap to unlock value through third-party developers and partners. This includes identifying extensions to existing integrations and new business models to bring value to our customers.
- You will explain a clear vision and product strategy for Avalara's platform offerings, summarizing customer and partner needs, market dynamics, and our needs.
- Promote platform approach with partners across Avalara and externally in the ecosystem.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to the high-performing, experienced product management team; recruit and develop elite product management talent.
- You will be a trusted advisor, developing relationships with business leaders and understanding their strategies, business plans, pain points, and priorities to inform the platform roadmap.
- Identify and lead important workstreams to ensure platform value creation in collaboration with internal and external partners.
- Create a phased approach and roadmap for value creation, balancing short and long-term goals.
- Define metrics and results that measure the platform's success and clear frameworks for decisions.
- Provide transparency and clarity around roadmaps while managing expectations.
- Manage product lifecycle from concept to launch of the product(s) across all products.
- Be an expert for Avalara's platform solutions and participate in press activities, conferences, and discussions with thought leaders and market analysts.
- Ensure committed product delivery timelines, including engineering, are met across the organization.
- Develop and maintain relationships with decision-makers across the organization.
About the Team
- 15+ years of experience in Product leadership roles
- 7+ years of experience leading strategic platform investments for commercial SaaS products.
- Experience leading and scaling teams, managing an evolving product portfolio, and driving product vision and strategy.
- You would have demonstrated a strategic thinker who can connect customer use cases to technology solutions and think holistically about the end-to-end customer experience.
- A history of problem-solving skills coupled with product intuition and judgment to make informed decisions despite imperfect information.
- Experience digging into customer feedback, following up to further define issues with partners, and delivering results through influence across all organizational layers.
- Demonstrated experience launching platform business models and standards in the market.
- Experience with Agile development methodologies and toolchains (e.g., Jira).
- History of working with a diverse B2B customer base spanning small, mid-market, and enterprise companies.
- Travel required - 30%
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, business, or a related field. MBA in a relevant field.
- Demonstrated experience partnering with or leading engineering teams.
- Experience with app ecosystems and partner evangelism.
- Experience with financial, accounting, and transactional systems.
