Advent Episcopal School—an independent, Episcopal school located in Birmingham, Alabama, serving grades JPK-8—seeks a Director of Lower School. Advent Episcopal School enrolls about 225 students with the mission to provide a superior education in a caring, Christian environment to prepare students for lives of continued learning, leadership, and service. This is a full-time, 11-month, exempt position for the school year that will report directly to the Assistant Head of School for Teaching & Learning.

As the Director of Lower School, you will lead the Junior Pre-Kindergarten (JPK) through 3rd grade, aligning with the strategic vision and educational ethos of the school. You will serve as a key member of the Academic Leadership Team, overseeing day-to-day logistics in your division, as well as providing instructional leadership, managing curriculum, faculty, and student welfare. Additionally, you will remain a part of the teaching faculty by providing one-on-one and small group instruction as needed. This role demands active collaboration with the Assistant Head of School for Teaching & Learning to enhance the learning experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide the educational program for JPK to 3rd grade, ensuring it resonates with the school's mission and the collaborative educational strategies set by the Assistant Head of School for Teaching & Learning.
  • Work in partnership with parents and teachers to support individual student academic needs, including support and enrichment.
  • Provide instructional leadership to the faculty, fostering a culture of professional growth and pedagogical innovation.
  • Oversee the holistic development of students in the lower grades including the identification and ongoing monitoring of at risk students, and supporting teachers and parents in the referral process for speech/language, OT, or other needed support therapies.
  • Support teachers in planning and programming for students in need of both academic enrichment and support.
  • In conjunction with the Assistant Head of School for Teaching & Learning, collaborate in creating and supporting Student Learning Plans (SLPs) and overseeing Academic/Achievement Testing.
  • Manage and oversee the discipline policies for JPK to 3rd grade, ensuring they are fair, effective, and consistent. Actively engage with parents in discussions about their child's behavior, providing support and guidance to students, parents, and faculty.
  • In conjunction with the Academic Leadership Team, manage daily operational aspects, including scheduling, resource allocation, and facility use.
  • Actively engage with the school community, fostering open communication and involvement in the educational journey.
  • Assist in the admission process for the testing, interviewing, and evaluating of applicants for enrollment. Qualifications:
    • Master's degree in Education or related field preferred.
    • At least 5 years of teaching experience in early elementary and/or late elementary grades, preferably with experience in educational leadership.
    • Proven track record in curriculum development and faculty management.
    • Strong leadership qualities, communication skills, and ability to connect with a diverse community.
