Pathology Laboratory Tech

Perform basic laboratory functions including specimen processing, customer service, and data entry procedures in support of the hospital's mission of patient care. Collect, process, store and transport blood, body fluids and tissue specimens. Perform clerical functions such as faxing, copying and mailing of reports and answering the phones professionally.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
For West Virginia Labs- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- West Virginia Point of Care Technician (PoC) License within 90 days of hire, as applicable per physical work location assignment.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
- Phlebotomy Certification (CPT).
- Six (6) months of Phlebotomy, Lab Assistant or Cytopreparatory experience.

- Prepare specimens in order to perform basic diagnostic procedures designed to contribute to accurate reproducible patient results.
- Operate laboratory equipment/instrumentation for basic testing and specimen processing consistent with standard operating procedures.
- Prepare reagents and solutions required to complete specimen processing and testing according to the standard operating procedures.
- Perform quality control procedures under direct supervision to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation.
- Perform routine maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment/instrumentation.
- Report test results with limited errors and in a timely manner.
- Utilize time, materials, and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests and workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.
- Complete assigned workload within established turnaround times by adjusting organization of work according to test ordering status.
- Communicate any unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the Supervisor/Manager.
- Communicate any unusual medical/technical problems or unusual patient results.
- Perform clerical duties as needed to support laboratory operations.

- Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for entire shift.

This position is for a casual position working as a Laboratory Tech inside the Anatomic Pathology Gross Room. The typical work hours for this position would be 1-2 shifts per week (Monday-Friday) starting at 3pm and working until about 7pm. The successful candidate would be expected to do the daily pathology specimen pickup at various locations inside the Hospital at 3pm. Upon return, the successful candidate would help accession the specimens collected on the specimen pickup and assist the other staff to enter all Pathology specimens received during their shift. In addition, the candidate would help restock supplies, clean grossing stations, replace expired/used reagents with fresh reagents, and miscellaneous duties to prepare the laboratory for the next day. At the end of each shift, the candidate would batch all the grossed cassettes and transport them to Histology to load on the tissue processors. Throughout the shift,the candidate would help accession and stain all frozens specimens received in the Gross Room from the Operating Rooms. They must follow and adhere to standard operating procedures and policies within the department. The laboratory technician must be computer literate and have a general knowledge of medical terminology. Visual acuity to distinguish small numbers and print on slides/cassettes, etc. and a close attention to detail is mandatory. Other ancillary duties not listed here may be included. A background or familiarity with biology, anatomy, and/or chemistry is preferred.
