The Oncology Genetics Counselor is responsible for the critical aspects of patient management including cancer risk assessment. selection and interpretation of appropriate hereditary cancer tests and discussions of options for cancer screening and risk reduction. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's (MGUH) philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Primary Duties:
- Provides comprehensive pre- and post-test counseling for hereditary breast, colon and other cancers and all aspects of case management. Gather and review medical records and prepare for clinic visits.
- Assist in the scheduling and preauthorization of genetic counseling clinic appointments. Serve as a liaison for identifying appropriate candidates for participation in research related to hereditary cancer at MGUH and other MedStar facilities. Performs follow-up for patients including documentation in patient chart, phone calls, summary letters, and letters of medical necessity.
- Participate in all relevant clinical and multidisciplinary tumor board meetings. Consult with local and national organizations and community support groups through participation on boards, advisory councils, and national meetings. Professional development encouraged via conference attendance and other activities.
- Develops written educational materials for patients as needed. Assist with instruction of graduate genetic counseling students, medical students, and residents. Exemplifies Guest and Staff Relations standards in all activities
Qualifications:
- Master's degree from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited genetic counseling program.
- 1-2 years' experience in cancer genetic counseling.
- ABGC (American Board of Genetic Counseling Board) eligible or certified by American Board of Genetic Counseling and in good standing.
