Job Description

Gilead's mission is to discover, develop, and deliver therapies that will improve the lives of patients with life-threatening illnesses worldwide. As a Senior Director, Business Strategy and Operations (Chief of Staff), Global Commercialization Strategy & Operations (GCSO), you will be reporting to the Senior Vice President, GCSO and will serve as a key business partner to the GCSO leadership team. You will be immersed in strategic and operational elements of the business. This role acts as a 'linking pin' between multiple functions, leads and drives tactical and strategic projects, provides analytical and operational insights, and ensures coordinated communications across functions in alignment with the unit's strategic priorities and direction.

The successful candidate will be a self-starting project manager extraordinaire with a strong track record of strategic and operational work experience across various settings and topics in the pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical industry. Candidates must have a track record of driving project success without direct authority, effectively network across the organization, and communicate across all levels in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and be part of the Leadership Team helping to organize and facilitate Leadership team meetings, and participate in decision making and strategy development, help the leader and team be as successful as they can be.
  • Business Strategy: a strategic advisor and confidant; a highly trusted person with whom to discuss and pressure‐test ideas. (A thought partner not necessarily responsible for business strategy, but a key contributor who facilitates strategic projects vs business strategy)
  • Special Projects: provide an extra set of hands to help with or lead strategic priorities as defined by the leadership team.
  • Business Operations: an organizer to help manage the GSCO LT – including curating agenda, writing minutes, and supporting in setting priorities, projects, decisions, and actions and ensuring follow up. Proactively identify opportunities for organizational impact.
  • Effectively network across the organization, build collaborative relationships, and communicate with senior leaders to connect projects and workstreams that would otherwise remain siloed. This is especially important with the key partners of GCSO including the R&D organizations, US commercial and G8 markets.
  • Serve as a key business partner and conduit to the leader ensuring that work within the team flows smoothly by driving operational efficiency and effectiveness, strategic alignment and integration of activities.
  • Project management: PM support to drive efficiency improvements, business performance, and to execute on the strategic priorities of the SVP and the GCSO LT.
  • Uncover areas within the business to drive performance or efficiency improvements and support project management of these initiatives aligned with GCSO and broader commercial organization goals.
  • Acts as an amplifier for the SVP GCSO; will prepare and deliver presentations, manage existing communications strategies, and innovate new ones.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree and Fourteen Years' Experience

OR

Masters' Degree and Twelve Years' Experience

OR

PhD and Twelve Years' Experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with 12+ years of growing responsibility in the biopharmaceutical industry with broad exposure to multiple functions
  • MBA or higher degree preferred.
  • Relevant professional experience in the Pharmaceuticals/Biotechnology industry, ideally in multiple parts of the value chain (e.g. Global strategy, Commercial, Research and Development, project management).
  • Highly resourceful and strategic thinker with strong emotional intelligence, operational rigor, and project management capabilities
  • Demonstrated consistent cross-functional collaborator and business partner, directly contributing to teams to achieve overall objectives
  • Strong communication skills across functions and leadership teams; comfort in business and technical discussions. Able to voice opinion diplomatically and to influence without direct authority
  • Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative, and innovative high-growth environment
  • Experience driving large initiatives from framing the problem, conducting research/analysis to building the business and operational plans through to driving execution to success is required
  • Depth of understanding of the function's financials; in partnership with finance partners, identifying initiatives to support commercial opportunities for growth
  • Strong enterprise thinking and approach
  • High proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel
  • Willingness to travel as needed within and outside the US (up to 20%)

The salary range for this position is: $237, $307, Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
