Seattle, Washington, United States The Meridian School Full time

The Meridian School cultivates a balance of mind and heart to nurture caring and confident learners prepared to thrive and contribute to their local and global communities.

About Meridian
Founded in 1976, The Meridian School has a long-standing history of cultivating joyous, deep learning and caring relationships among students, faculty, and families. A community focused on nurturing the next generation of cultural and global stewards committed to inspiring and impacting the world resonates at our school. At Meridian, you will see, feel, and hear that Meridian Cares, a mantra that reminds us to care for ourselves, our place, and our world.

Enrolling 180 students in grades PreK-5, Meridian believes that the challenges in our world require culturally competent, well-rounded, critically thinking individuals who are prepared to be responsible and active global citizens. At the core of Meridian's philosophy is the relationship between teachers and students. Small classes ensure that students thrive; children feel known and safe both intellectually and emotionally. The curriculum promotes integration across subjects, connected thinking, and real-world application. In our project-based, experiential program, learning how to solve problems and make good choices is a priority, as is respect for oneself, others, and our place.

Our Place
Nestled among trees in a 6.5-acre city park that is shared with the surrounding neighborhood,
Meridian's location provides an urban oasis for education. Academics take place indoors and out, and lessons in community begin by simply walking through the door. The expansive outdoor space offers resources for hands-on learning, creative play, and physical activity—integral to promoting balance in students' lives. Spacious and welcoming, the historic Good Shepherd Center is home not only to Meridian but to more than two dozen community organizations, including Seattle Tilth, Wallingford Senior Center, EarthGen, and the weekly summer Farmers Market.

Our Values

Individual Potential
We celebrate the broad variety of human potential by knowing and valuing each child as an individual with unique identities and passions. Students are encouraged to take emotional and intellectual risks that build their confidence, perseverance, and unique voices.

Inclusive Community
We work to create an inclusive and equitable community where students, families, and staff celebrate their individual identities and feel respected, supported, and a sense of belonging. We foster a culture of caring and seek opportunities to engage with local, regional, and global communities beyond the school.

Flexible Learning
We understand that each student needs different things at different times. We embrace diverse learning styles and educate through a varied and creative curriculum that both stretches areas of strength and supports areas of growth.

Social and Emotional Awareness
We believe an understanding of emotions and social interactions is essential to the development of healthy individuals and communities. We provide tools and guidance to help students grow their self-knowledge and compassion as they learn to care and advocate for themselves, others, and their environment.

About the Opportunity
The Board of Trustees is seeking an Interim Head of School to assume this role in late August/early September. Ideally, this leader will serve for two years, supporting a thoughtful and intentional transition to the permanent Head in the school year. The Interim Head of School will be an experienced educational leader who is passionate about ensuring students learn in a joyful, dynamic environment. They will bring a commitment to collaboration, developing talent, and building community. Following a period of significant and continued change at the school, there is a yearning to rebuild the foundation of trust and respect centered on the shared focus of joyful learning for elementary-age children. We continue to celebrate the strong, close-knit relationships among the community and between faculty and staff while welcoming a leader who conveys stability and calm.

The Ideal Candidate Will Be:

  • A warm, visible, and accessible presence throughout the school.
  • An inspiring, effective, and transparent communicator who will foster a collaborative and trusting climate among all constituents.
  • Able to facilitate inclusive dialogue, make difficult decisions, have courageous conversations, navigate conflict, and build trust.
  • An experienced independent school leader with a track record of hiring, developing, retaining, and inspiring an excellent faculty, as well as building leadership capacity in the senior team.
  • A culturally competent and sensitive leader with an unwavering personal and professional
commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, coupled with the capacity to support others in this work.
  • A pedagogical leader with an understanding of progressive education that looks to current
educational research and trends to enhance and ensure program relevance, alignment, and
    effectiveness.
  • A flexible, open-minded, inquiring, and curious educator who takes a genuine interest in the work of the faculty and staff and can identify and develop talent.
  • Genuine in their love of children and dedicated to providing what students from pre kindergarten through fifth grade need to grow and thrive in school.
  • Skilled at inviting input from stakeholders while providing a well-defined decision-making process with clarity in direction, responsibility, accountability, and expectations for those involved.
