Supervisory Medical Technician

Summary

This position is located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the VA Norther California Health Care System, Sacramento VA Medical Center in Mather, California responsible for the overall operation of the outpatient phlebotomy room as well as phlebotomy inpatient, as well as, responsible for accessioning and processing specimens for different sections of the laboratory.

Duties

• Provides guidance and technical direction necessary for accomplishing the work;
• Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff, which are clearly communicated;
• Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance;
• Resolves informal complaints and grievances and effects disciplinary measures when appropriate;
• Reviews and approves/disapproves leave requests;
• Ensures subordinates are trained;
• Obtains patient specimens using state of the art techniques and equipment;
• Provides collection requirements for timed and other patient samples;
• Uses various types of collection devices to insure that samples are collected appropriately;
• Assists in training newly assigned clinic personnel in laboratory procedures, practices and techniques;
• Evaluates specimen for analysis and if unusable requests new specimen;
• Prepares all types of patient specimens for shipment to reference laboratories for testing;
• Ensures that specimen integrity is maintained during all phases of specimen storage and shipment;
• Prepares specimen for analysis ensuring the physiological state of the properties are maintained;
• Maintains the laboratory facilities and equipment;
• Controls supplies and ensures that sufficient supply of reagents, consumables and equipment are available at all times;
• Maintains comprehensive records of written and practical quality control measures and patient data;
• Coordinates with data processing support services to update tracking/inventory data;
• Modifies data sets as required to maintain functionality and integrity of applications;
• Records information pertaining to the storage of specimens or reagents;
• Completes appropriate tracking/inventory system information;
• Performs work in the testing and examination procedures carried out in the laboratory;
• Prepares various types of specimen from any part of the body, or prepares highly specialized specimens involving many steps;
• Keeps abreast of current developments in the field and makes suggestions for changes in techniques/procedures;
• Performs chemistry testing which includes a variety of difficult and complex procedures for which procedural instructions exist;
• Recognizes indicators of malfunction and evaluates validity of data;
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm
