The Amazon Search team owns the software that powers Search - a critical customer-focused feature of Whenever you visit an Amazon site anywhere in the world, it's our technology that delivers you outstanding search results. Our services are used by millions of Amazon customers every day.

Key job responsibilities

The Search Engine Infrastructure team is responsible for the large-scale distributed systems that power those results. We design, build and operate high performance fault tolerant services that apply the latest technologies to solve customer problems. As part of this vision, we are building the infrastructure to build the next generation of indexing systems that solve a wide range of problems, ranging from Product Search to Conversational Shopping. We focus on high availability, frugally ingesting many petabytes of data per day via bulk and streaming APIs, with strict freshness guarantees. We work with technical and organizational leaders across multiple Amazon teams to make this happen.

A day in the life

On an average day, you will:

  1. Be responsible for the development life cycle of a key component of our search ingestion engine.
  2. Engage with teams across Amazon to evangelize the team and projects, build relationships and help identify existing technologies to meet your team's goals.
  3. Manage and execute against project plans and delivery commitments.
  4. Manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team.
  5. Ensure that design and architecture decisions by your team meet goals and vision of the search service.
  6. Manage resources, staffing, mentoring, and enhancing and maintaining a best-of-class engineering team.
  7. Work closely with the engineers to architect and develop the best technical design and approach.
  8. Report on status of development, quality, operations, and system performance to management.
  9. Responsible for operations of the systems.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
  • 5+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
