The Office of Capital Collateral Regional Counsel Northern Region is accepting applications for an opening for the full-time position of Investigator to participate in providing post-conviction representation to people on Florida's Death Row. Investigators are a critical part of our defense team.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

CCRC-N investigators are responsible for gathering facts and mitigation information about our clients and their cases. General areas of responsibility include locating and interviewing witnesses; writing reports, drafting declarations, serving subpoenas; developing a relationship with clients; interviewing clients' friends and family members; collecting documents; reviewing trial evidence; and working with attorneys and experts to develop mitigation themes.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:

Investigators must possess a commitment to the defense of death-sentenced individuals; have excellent oral and written communication skills; have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to develop a rapport with people of different backgrounds; be able to work independently and take initiative; be capable of analyzing and communicating complex information; and work well in teams. Performs related work as required. General areas of responsibility include interviewing our clients; locating and interviewing witnesses, family members, experts, law enforcement personnel and others with knowledge of the case or client; locate, gather and organize documents from various offices and agencies; review and research case documents; conduct thorough research into an individual's family and social history; prepare comprehensive written reports; serve subpoenas; visit crime scenes; review evidence; testify in court; assist attorneys and other office staff in preparation for court proceedings; and other duties as assigned.

The job requires extensive overnight travel, including out of state and working non-traditional hours. This position also requires considerable resourcefulness, creativity, initiative and drive. A commitment to working with indigent clients is a must.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or its equivalent and two years of experience in a related field or as an investigator or a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. A background in law, social work, or mental health is a plus. A high level of computer literacy is required, and applicants must be able to organize work and set priorities to meet critical deadlines. This position may require extensive travel. It may also require working beyond business hours, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PREFERENCES:

Applicants should possess fact investigation experience. Capital or post-conviction experience is preferred. Knowledge of the principles and purposes of mitigation is important. A degree and/or experience in social work or a mental health field is desirable. Non-legal prior experience is helpful. Additional requirements and qualifications are computer proficiency; ability to communicate and work well with others; ability to lift boxes and equipment; ability to perform each of the tasks associated with this position.
