Position in this function is responsible for providing leadership and support to other Billers and assisting in the day-to-day operations of the Business Office; office location is in El Segundo, CA.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Consistently exhibits behavior and communication skills that demonstrate Optum's commitment to superior customer service, including quality, care and concern with each and every internal and external customer
  • Maintains current working knowledge of CPT and ICD-9 codes, required modifiers and encounter data
  • Generates claims from CDO system for data entry
  • Reviews paper encounter forms to accuracy
  • Performs data entry of encounter forms and copayments
  • Assists with patient registration and insurance verification
  • Maintains summary encounter data tracker report
  • Reviews encounter forms for accuracy and completeness. Makes necessary corrections
  • Prepares payments for data entry according to Payment Calculation policies and procedures
  • Assists with patient billing inquiries
  • Acts as liaison between Site Operations and Revenue Operations
  • Applies knowledge of Medicare and Medi-Cal guidelines in reviewing claims to ensure appropriate use of modifiers and CPT/ICD-9 codes
  • Corrects claims appearing on Edit Reports
  • Serves as a resource to Optum staff on coding and general billing guidelines
  • Uses, protects, and discloses Optum patients' protected health information (PHI) only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards

Years of post-high school education can be substituted/is equivalent to years of experience

Required Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience in medical billing
  • Professional working knowledge of CPT & Diagnosis Coding, Medical Terminology, and basic Anatomy
  • Proven ability to demonstrate solid proficiency using MS Suite and other systems
  • Hybrid role (ability to come into our El Segundo, CA office 1-2x per month)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPC certificate
  • 3+ years of medical billing and/or related job experience
  • IDX experience
  • HMO/managed care experience
  • Proven bilingual

California Residents Only: The hourly range for California residents is $16.00 to $32.55 per hour.
