This is a great opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience in the Emergency Managementfield.

The Emergency Management Intern will be responsible for assisting the Emergency Preparedness Staff with the planning and implementation of events and trainings. This position will also help to assess, promote and evaluate countywide emergency services and response capabilities. The Emergency Preparedness Unit provides a central point of intra and inter-governmental coordination, working with all law enforcement, fire, EMS, public health, public works, communications, administration, and the elected officials involved in planning, training, exercising, responding to, and recovering from disasters and major emergencies affecting Dakota County and its regional, state, and federal partners.

Normal hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. This position may require that the incumbent periodically work evenings and weekends to respond to emergencies or attend training events.


Minimum Qualifications

1 year of coursework completed towards a degree related to emergency management, AND
* Completion of the following courses: ICS-100, ICS-200, and ICS-700, AND
* A valid driver's license


Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

  1. Assist Dakota County Emergency Management with planning, training, and other duties related to both the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP) drill and full-scale exercise.
  2. Attend meetings of the Dakota County Exercise Design Team (EDT) and assist in the planning, coordination, and other duties related to the August EDT full-scale training exercise.
  3. Work with Emergency Management staff to develop the Dakota County Fairgrounds Emergency Action Plan.
  4. Work with Emergency Management on the Byllesby Dam Functional Exercise
  5. Assist with any meetings, documentation needs, and public outreach related to any flooding issues that arise in Dakota County during the Spring and Summer.
  6. Assist with maintaining the Dakota County Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP), and Radiological Emergency Preparedness Plan (REP).
  7. Assist with updating and maintaining emergency contact information for cities, townships, and other selected public and private agencies within Dakota County.
  8. Attend regular meetings of the Dakota County Domestic Preparedness Committee (DPC), Dakota County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Council, Dakota County Hospital Partners, Dakota County Emergency Preparedness Team, Dakota County Fire Chiefs, EDT, and other emergency management- related meetings.
  9. Complete special projects as assigned. This may include planning and developing materials, arranging facilities and equipment, event registration, and information tracking in support of Building Emergency Response Plan, Continuity of Operations Plan, and Emergency Operations Plan training and exercises.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is primarily stationary, although there is movement, and transport of lightweight items such as notebooks, and work papers. The work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office. May require occasional travel.
