SHIFT: Day/Evening Teaching Assignments | Based upon the needs of the college

LOCATION: Lakeshore Technical College - Cleveland, Wisconsin

POSITION SUMMARY: Faculty in this role are required to maintain proficiency using equipment common to modern law enforcement training, including; Non-Lethal Training Firearms, Non-Lethal Training Ammunition (NLTA), foam batons, inert pepper spray, electronic control devices loaded with non-conductive training cartridges, training cartridges used in less-lethal control equipment, rubber / inert or otherwise fake training knives, firearms, and other props, high impact protective training gear (FIST Suit), standard mobility training gear (SPARTAN training gear), NLTA gear (Simunition brand qualified equipment), and specialized training gear (TASER or HALT training suits).

Faculty in this role must be able to operate law enforcement handguns, rifles, and other weapons to a high degree of skill equal to or exceeding the testing requirements set out for the students in the DOJ approved curriculum. Faculty in this role must supervise cohorts of students in higher risk training environments. Faculty in this role must guide, direct, and mentor adjunct instructors and instructional assistants. This position requires faculty to assist in the maintenance of program accreditation. Faculty in this role are required to create effective relationships with students and law enforcement agencies. Faculty ensure the safety of students in inherently dangerous training environments through protocols, procedures, discipline, best practices, and proper use of equipment.

Educate students with core knowledge and current developments in the discipline. Provide regular curriculum and course improvement with continually updated teaching methods. Participate in subject or program leadership teams and college-wide committees. Work effectively in a team-based environment. Seek opportunities for continuous professional development.

Responsible for placing learning first and providing educational experiences for learners in accordance with the mission of the college inclusive of facilitating learning, assessing student performance, as well as instruction and outcomes, developing and maintaining current/relevant course materials and curriculum, working with high school dual credit teachers, and communicating with the community, other schools, the college, the division, and team members. Teaching/training in business and industry may be assigned.

Provide high quality customer service throughout all interactions. This includes but is not limited to: work effectively and positively with people from all backgrounds; help the customer find solutions; anticipate needs, and follow-up with the customer. Provide friendly, respectful, personalized experiences throughout every interaction.

This is a year-round position serving, on average, 40 hours per week. During assigned instructional terms, or semesters, 60% of the week is designated for students contact time, or teaching, and 40% for professional expectations, as outlined below.

Instruction
Create effective relationships with students to promote learning.
Create effective relationships with background investigators to support background investigators with respect to the hire-ability of recruits.
Ensure the safety of students in higher risk training environments including firearms, emergency vehicle operations, use of force training, pepper spray training, electronic control device training, baton training, pursuit immobilization technique training, and less lethal training through protocols, procedures, discipline, best practices, and proper use of equipment.
Provide regular curriculum and course improvement with continually updated teaching methods.

Facilitate optimal learning through integration of technology and utilization of appropriate delivery methods.

Instruction/Manage the Learning Environment
Curriculum: Integrate learning theories and models into curriculum design. Update curriculum appropriately in curriculum design repository system and the college learning management system according to the college schedule and guidelines.
Delivery: Facilitate learning, utilizing a variety of delivery modes and learning theories. Encourage engagement of students while maintaining a safe, inclusive, and functioning environment.
Assessment: Evaluate student learning based on course competencies and program outcomes, employing formative and summative assessments. Provide constructive and timely feedback Retain records through the college information system according to program requirements.
Support Dual Credit and Credit for Prior Learning activities.
There may be operational needs requiring substitutions of alternative duties and/or the creation of flexible delivery (e.g., CBE, iFlex) in courses.

Enhance Student Success
Modify teaching and learning based upon feedback and assessment results to improve student success.
Create an inclusive and equitable learning environment designed to address student needs and partner with accommodation or other support services to provide reasonable accommodations, when appropriate.
Advise students in ways that foster the development of the whole student, and encourages persistence and timely completion of a course, certificate, diploma, or degree.
Assess the effectiveness of a course and/or program and take necessary steps to enhance outcomes.

Pursue Professional Development
Participate in initial and ongoing required professional development. This includes, but is not limited to, college-wide meetings, on-site professional development days, Wisconsin Technical College System Faculty Quality Assurance System FQAS courses, etc.
Develop and update annual goals as documented in the employee performance review.
Maintain required industry certifications and/or licensures.

Participate in Planning or College Advancement
Participate in division, department, and program meetings to improve program health.
Provide input into hiring, mentoring, and succession planning.
Participate in college advancement initiatives, including college-wide teams, advisory committees, and/or statewide teams.
Contribute to the design, implementation, and reporting of grants.
Support the College accreditation process.
Participate in program planning, development, and modification.

Outreach
Participate in outreach, recruitment, and community events as determined by college leadership.
Collaborate with Workforce Solutions on scoping business and industry needs.

Other
Activities required to maintain program accreditation unless part of coordinator duties.
Grant writing and reporting activities may be required.
Activities required to maintain competency, partnerships, and mutual services within external/offsite location.
Oversee and coordinate operations at external sites and satellite locations that maintain campus standards.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's Degree in; law enforcement management/leadership, non-law enforcement management/leadership, education, criminal justice, or other related field is required.
  • If no bachelor's degree, successful candidate will be required to complete within five years of employment.
  • Master's degree in a related discipline is preferred.
  • Applicant must have a minimum of three years (6,000 hours) of experience specific to program needs at the time of hire. At least one year (2,000 hours) is within the past five years.
  • Teaching experience, preferably in law enforcement.
All instructors are required to meet and maintain Higher Learning Commission (HLC) requirements, Faculty Quality Assurance Standards (FQAS), and/or other job specific licensing standards.

Per subject area taught, instructors are required to possess the appropriate credential.

In evaluating candidates for this position, the College may consider a combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform duties of position.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION
  • Must meet requirements of appropriate accrediting agencies, have or be able to obtain Wisconsin Department of Justice Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) certifications.
  • Must be certified as a WI LESB Certified Instructor in Firearms, Defensive and Arrest Tactics, Emergency Vehicle Operation and Control, Vehicle Contacts, Professional Communication Skills, and Tactical Response, or the ability to obtain these certifications within 6 months of hire.
TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:
Experience with computer assisted instruction and software.
Working knowledge of PC software in a Windows environment.
Be familiar with basic hardware; use a laptop, printer, and scanning techniques equipment.
Securely access college network systems using appropriate multi-factor authentication, navigate through Windows; and appropriate navigation through the internet.
Use voicemail, email, and calendaring programs.
Understand database concepts and use queries; create a basic spreadsheet; create simple charts and graphs; develop materials using presentation software; manage and create files.
Use video conferencing.
Utilize PeopleSoft appropriately.
Use electronic timesheet.
Use Blackboard and associated tools.
Utilize classroom technologies necessary for instruction (e.g., Interactive Whiteboard, SmartBoard, Projectors, Document Camera, and Lecture Capture equipment).
Manage laptop carts.
Use Worldwide Instructional Design System (WIDS) for curriculum development and access to course/syllabi information.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Possess excellent classroom delivery skills, which encourages success and participation on the part of students.
Must be innovative and able to collaborate with other staff in developing curriculum for classroom instruction.
Must be well motivated and have a strong interest in contributing to the success of the College.
Positive human relations and effective written and oral communication skills essential.
Exemplify college values in all staff and student interactions as well as services delivered.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and relate successfully with staff, students, and people of diverse cultural, social or educational backgrounds.
Fluent, bilingual individual is beneficial

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.
The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
Must be able to work outside in varying weather conditions.
The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Ability to work non-standard hours including mornings and evening hours.
