Summary This position is located within the FAA, Aviation Safety (AVS), Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM), Aerospace Medical Education Division (AAM-400).

The Aeromedical Training Officer provides leadership in the administration of educational programs and other challenging activities under the minimal direction of the manager or executive.

Responsibilities Applies experience and expert knowledge applicable to analyzing, designing, developing, conducting, evaluating and administering nationwide airman education programs (existing and new) required to fulfill the aeromedical training needs of FAA flight crews and civil aviation pilot.

Recommends policies, procedures, and guidelines to the Manager of the Aerospace Medical Education Division, Director of the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), and the Federal Air Surgeon, as required, for the effective implementation of airman education programs.

Identifies and resolves challenging problems or issues that often cross-organizational boundaries and that may have an impact on the accomplishment of strategic objectives.

Provides guidance to less-experienced professionals, leads large project/program teams, defines and develops internal policies and procedures, and predicts potential issues and proposes preventive actions.

Participates in the development of aviation physiology and global survival training standards for FAA flight crews. Reviews existing standards periodically, and when necessary, recommends updates for publication in FAA Order 4040, FAA Aircraft Management Program.

Optimizes procedures and/or methodologies to evaluate FAA flight crews' knowledge and understanding of aviation physiology and global survival and how to effectively apply this knowledge to their day-to-day job-related activities.

Develops airman education plans which are integral to the strategic plan, operational plan, mission, and vision of the Aerospace Medical Education Division, the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), and the Office of Aerospace Medicine.

Manages the airman education programs' budget and ensures the effective and efficient utilization of all resources. Utilizes a variety of instructional technologies and/or methodologies (including distance education) in support of all airman education programs. Conducts nationwide airman education activities in support of the FAA National Accident Prevention Program.

Coordinates with the senior physiologists of the US Air Force and US Navy in establishing policies and procedures to comply with the FAA/USAF/USN agreements on physiological training for civil aviation pilots.

Designs, develops, and distributes didactic materials (slides, transparencies, videos, manuals, handouts, multimedia presentations, computer-based instruction CBI, etc.) used in support of all airman education programs.

Provides altitude chamber training for FAA flight crews (mandatory) and civil aviation pilots (voluntary) at CAMI. Performs duties as chamber controller, instructor, or recorder in support of altitude chamber operations.

Operates and maintains CAMI's altitude (hypobaric) chambers, thermal chambers, spatial disorientation trainers (vertigons), and the emergency ditching simulator in support of physiological and global survival training programs as well as research projects.

Recommends standard operating procedures for the effective, efficient, and safe operation of these equipment.

Supports altitude research projects by scheduling use of altitude chambers, operating the equipment, addressing safety considerations related to individual (experimental subjects and chamber personnel) and equipment exposure to altitude, familiarizing the investigators and experimental subjects with emergency procedures, and ensuring availability of emergency medical support.

Develops and maintains a database on altitude chamber operations for the purpose of assessing the prevalence of adverse individual reactions to altitude chamber flights, evaluating the long-term effects of repeated chamber flight exposures among instructors, and monitoring chamber workload or usage.

Conducts special projects as assigned by the Manager, Aerospace Medical Education Division. Requirements Conditions of Employment We are not accepting applications from noncitizens.

Qualifications Basic Requirements Degree:

Successful completion of a 4 year course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by a major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.


OR Combination of education and experience:

courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study.


In Addition to Basic Requirements:

To qualify at the FV-J (FG/GS-14/15) level you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-I, FG/GS 13 level in the Federal Service.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Specialized experience includes experience with human physiology, aviation/aerospace physiology, and/or environmental physiology to accomplish assignments; experience with developing aeromedical training on topics such as i.e.

altitude stress, procedure improvements relative to aircraft separation; cabin environmental control systems, methods of detection/protection from environmental threats, hypoxia training devices, protective breathing equipment, modeling tools to assess and predict physiologic impairment or incapacitation, and the adequacy of current and emerging technology at altitude or under aviation environment situations; experience working in a training environment cooperatively and productively; and establishes and maintains professional work relationships with staff and customers.
