About Us

Southwest Leadership Academy Charter School (SLA) was founded to address the need for community access to exceptional, leadership-based education in the heart of southwest Philadelphia. Southwest Leadership Academy Charter School supports over 600 students in grades K-8 in single-sex classrooms, leveraging research from the world-renowned Gurian Institute around socio-emotional learning and differentiation between the sexes, fueling growth, leadership, and engagement for all students. Kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms are supported by two educators from the SLA team. In developing these skills, students will cultivate an array of leadership components that they can apply to community change on a global scale.

Job Summary

This role offers a dedicated Autistic Support Teacher the opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in grades K-8. You will provide individualized instruction, develop and implement learning plans, and closely monitor student progress. Collaboration is key, as you'll work with parents, school personnel, related service providers, and general education teachers to foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a proactive, student-centered, strengths based approach to developing and implementing each student's Individualized Education Plan
  • Administers a variety of evaluative tools and assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and goals (e.g. behavioral, motor development and communication skills, academic needs, vocational abilities, etc.)
  • Provide ongoing feedback to students, parents, and administration on the student's progress
  • Collaborate with parents, instructional staff, other school support personnel for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes and achieving student educational plan objectives.Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
  • Provide differentiated instruction (e.g. online curriculum, alternative curriculum, multimedia, assistive technology, modified content, multi-sensory, etc.) for the purpose of providing students with different instructional avenues that address individualized learning within established curriculum guidelines
  • Maintain documents, files, and records (e.g. grades, IEPs, etc.) to provide up-to-date information and historical references in accordance with established guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Monitor and manage students' behavior and/or activities in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participate in a variety of meetings (e.g. IEP meetings, staff meetings, parent teacher conferences, etc.) to convey and gather information required to perform various functions
  • Prepare a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs, progress reports, exit plans, data sheets, lesson plans, evaluations, etc.) to document student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Reports incidents and appropriate documentation (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, bullying, emergency safety intervention, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to the education code of ethics and school policies as a mandated reporter. Other duties as assigned by the principal and/or Student Services Requirements & Qualifications
  • Pennsylvania Special Education Teaching Certification is required; Autism Endorsement Certificate Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or related is required
  • At least 2 years of experience working with children with special needs
  • Commitment to the success of all SLA students and specifically to raising the academic achievement of children in high-poverty communities and/ or children with special needs.
  • Desire to grow professionally and seek out new opportunities to learn; and integrity and clarity in all communications and interactions.
  • Ability to use data to inform instruction
  • Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to critically assess challenges and identify effective instructional/behavioral solutions to support the success of each of his or her students.
  • Exceptional classroom management skills.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of technology used to design and differentiate instruction for students. Additional Information Salary
