The Adjunct Instructor is responsible for the academic success of students enrolled in a campus-based course in accordance with program and course objectives and course syllabi. Each adjunct instructor should be highly knowledgeable about the subject matter for their assigned course, and maintain expertise in the subject area. The adjunct instructor is expected to actively monitor and track individual student progress and provide support and direction as needed, both during the class and outside of class as needed and appropriate.

Brief Overview of type of faculty position we are seeking to fill:

The Department of Psychology at Simmons University seeks adjunct instructors to teach Biological Psychology with lab (PSYC 201/201L), Seminar in Neuroscience (NB 347), and/or Drugs & Behavior (PSYC 244) during the Spring 2024 semester; service dates are January 16th to May 11th, 2024. Classes will be held in person. Instructors are also expected to be available to meet with students for office hours, either through video/zoom calls or in person, as needed.

Course Descriptions

PSYC 201 Biological Psychology (with lab)

Considers some of the ways behavior and experience are related to biological processes. Classroom and laboratory topics include brain structure and function, drugs and addiction, brain damage, sleep and consciousness, stress, memory and amnesia, and mental illness. Includes lectures and laboratory sessions.

PSYC 244 Drugs and Behavior

Explores the psychological, biological, and societal factors that influence drug use. Focuses on the neurochemical bases of drug action and the experimental paradigms used in studying the behavioral effects of drugs. Topics include illegal and legal drugs, including medications for mental illness.

NB 347 Seminar in Neuroscience

Addresses current topics through readings, presentations, activities. Normally open only to senior Neuroscience & Behavior majors.

Responsibilities: The adjunct instructor will be responsible for lecturing and leading in weekly class discussions. For Biological Psychology (PSYC 201), the adjunct will also be responsible for running laboratory sessions.

Requirements:
  • Master's degree required; Ph.D. preferred.
  • Teaching experience is preferred, at either the college or high school level.
