Summary

The Associate Chief, Clinical & Educational Programs located in the Charles George VAMC responsible for coordinating multiple programs in pharmacy service in a medical facility and serves as the Acting Service Chief in the absence of the Service Chief.



Duties

VA Careers - Pharmacy:

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • As primary provider in area of clinical practice expertise, evaluates patients and monitors response to drug therapy. Makes changes in drug therapy within scope of practice as needed depending on assessment of appropriate laboratory and clinical monitors. Also recommends patients for referral, when presenting with other medical signs and symptoms, to appropriate clinic and/or provider. Educates patients on their drug therapy with respect to compliance and dietary restrictions, heightening awareness of toxicity and interactions with other medications.
  • Is responsible for the review of medication regimens within area of clinical practice and notifying providers of any findings that might require action that include but are not limited to: misuse of medication, i.e., abuse, overuse, or underuse, inappropriate dose, dose interval, or dosage form, drug and/or pharmacologic duplication, adverse drug drug, drug-lab, or drug-food interactions, adverse drug reactions, inappropriate response, and inappropriate therapeutic regimen.
  • Advises primary provider on aspects of clinical pharmacokinetics as it pertains to the monitoring of serum plasma concentrations and its relationship to patient response. Also, advises primary provider as to how to individualize dosing of selected medications based on interpretation of these serum levels.
  • Serves as drug information resource for health care providers answering inquires regarding therapeutics, drug interactions, dosing, side effects, etc.
  • Serves as clinical advisor to the System Chief, Pharmacy Service, providing data on drugs, i.e., adverse reactions; side effects; drug-drug, drug-laboratory test interactions; etc.
  • Responsible for the education of clinical clerkship students for students assigned.
  • When assessing or providing patient care, considers the age of the patient as it relates to ability to understand directions, provide objective self-assessment or any other medical milieu appropriate to. the overall treatment plan.
  • Responsible for coordinating clerkships and rotations system-wide for all trainees and students in concert with the Pharmacy Service Program Assistant. In cooperation with Clerkship and/or Rotation Coordinators of the Affiliated Programs, the incumbent will determine and coordinate student/trainee assignments to the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist staff and the Supervisory staff as required.
  • Responsible for the education ·of clinical clerkship students for students assigned.
  • Responsible for serving as Program Director and/or preceptor by coordinating and supervising the activities of postgraduate residents in area of clinical practice expertise.
  • Provides lectures as requested to pharmacy student~ in cooperation with course coordinator for College of Pharmacy pursuant to affiliation agreement(s).
  • Schedules in-service educational programs for the pharmacy staff as well as other medical staff within area of clinical practice expertise to meet needs of WNC VA HCS.
  • Conducts annual Pharmacy Service Educational Need~ Assessment and follows-up on that review as appropriate.
  • Responsible for monitoring, development, and evaluation of the activities of the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist. This includes setting the agenda for the programmatic goals of the clinical section and delegating responsibility to the clinical staff for achievement of those goals. This is accomplished with regular meetings with clinical staff to outline these goals and activities. The progress of programs initiated and performed by the clinical staff will be reported to the Health System Administration through the System Chief, Pharmacy Service. Evaluation includes interviewing prospective employee candidates, recommending appointments, advancements, or promotions or disciplinary actions to the Professional Standards Board.
