San Francisco, California, United States Benchling Full time

Biotechnology is rewriting life as we know it, from the medicines we take, to the crops we grow, the materials we wear, and the household goods that we rely on every day. But moving at the new speed of science requires better technology.
Benchling's mission is to unlock the power of biotechnology. The world's most innovative biotech companies use Benchling's R&D Cloud to power the development of breakthrough products and accelerate time to milestone and market.
Come help us bring modern software to modern science.

Benchling is on a mission to accelerate the pace of life sciences research. To do that, we build a suite of tools that scientists use daily to solve humanity's most pressing problems. Some of these tools help scientists better collaborate—like our electronic lab notebook & workflow product. Others help scientists do their research—like our molecular biology suite, which scientists use to analyze & work with DNA. All of the tools that we build require that the data in Benchling reflects the actions that scientists are taking in the physical world. That's where the Inventors team comes in.

The Search team owns and operates the search infrastructure and UX for discovery of data in Benchling. We recently rolled out Elasticsearch as our search infra (see the engineering blog). In addition to document searches, the team also supports advanced chemical and biological searches. We are looking for a lead engineer to join our team to work closely with the product teams to deliver search driven capabilities to our customers.

Build and operate the end-to-end platform for search and discovery at Benchling
Support end-to-end availability, reliability and performance of our Search systems.
Contribute to algorithms and infrastructure for scientific searches
Optimize and scale our change data capture and indexing pipelines
Improve search coverage, and reduce implementation time for new features for applications teams
Designing and creating CI/CD pipelines for platform provisioning, full lifecycle management. Building the platform control panel to operate the fleet of systems efficiently.

Have 8+ years of experience or a proven track record in software engineering
2 years of working with Elasticsearch is strongly desired
Experience with data processing technologies Kafka, Kinesis, Spark, Flink, or other open-source or commercial software
You ship code quickly and care about the real world impact of your code
Have strong abilities in problem solving and iterating on feedback
Comfortable with complexity in the short term but can build towards simplicity in the long term
Strong communicator with both words and data - you understand what it takes to go from raw data to something a human understands
Willing to work onsite in our SF office 3 days a week.
Are interested in learning more about life science (prior knowledge is not required; desire to learn is a must)
