EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: This position requires knowledge of the provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Educational Code as it applies to operating vehicles and transporting students; basic first aid practices, procedures, techniques; and safe driving practices as well as the knowledge of grounds keeping and gardening methods and practices; the safe use, maintenance, and operation of grounds keeping tools and hand power equipment; the safe use and application of pesticides and herbicides for pest/weed control purposes; modern farming methods, techniques, and practices; the care of feeding farm animals and livestock; the safe and proper operation and maintenance of farm equipment and machines including tractors, discs, planters, feed mixers, cement mixer, chainsaw, etc.; weed and pest control methods, techniques and practices; basic electrical, plumbing, welding, and carpentry repairs and related tools; planting, irrigating, and fertilizing corps; and routine grounds keeping methods of pruning, trimming, caring for vineyards and orchards.

Must posses the skill to effectively and safely use hand and hand power tools associated with grounds keeping and landscape work; understand and follow both oral and written instructions in an independent manner; read and write at a level necessary to perform required duties successfully; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties; effectively operate and maintain farm equipment and tools; make routine electrical, plumbing, welding, and carpentry repairs; quickly identify problem situations and areas and take appropriate action to resolve problems identified; prepare routine reports and correspondence; effectively care for and feed farm animals and livestock; establish and maintain proper student conduct on school vehicle; drive a school bus safely and efficiently; to exercise good judgment and extreme caution while driving; maintain valid certification as school bus driver according to State regulations; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Drives a school transportation vehicle with a prescribed route(s) in accordance with time schedules; picking up and discharging students at designated stops; escorts and assists students on and off vehicle an across streets when necessary; transports students and teachers on field trips to various locations; planning necessary route(s) and stops as needed; maintains order and proper discipline of student passengers according to District policy; conducts safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily; services buses with gas and oil; checks and fills tires and batteries; evacuated vehicle in safe and timely manner when necessary and conducts periodic drills for same as required by law; completing necessary reports upon request; maintains cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating condition; checks out and report needed mechanical repairs when necessary; completes periodic mileage reports and time sheets; attends various meetings regarding safety, first aid, training updates, as required attends driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children; may perform custodial and grounds keeping duties during non-driving time; Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned essential functions of this job description are the following essential physical requirements. Prepares soil for planting; plants, irrigates, and fertilizes pasture and crop areas; discs and harrows field and vineyards; prunes and trains vines and trees; directs and assists in the harvesting of crops; repairs fences, corrals, and makes minor repairs to farm buildings; feeds and cares for District-owned livestock; assists F.F.A. members in feeding and caring for their livestock on the school farm site; assists agricultural instructors in demonstrating approved methods of planting, pruning, harvesting, and animal care; operates and maintains farm equipment including tractors, discs, planters, food mixers, etc.; assists in teaching students in the safe and proper operation of farm equipment; orders and inventories farm supplies and equipment and maintains related records;

performs routine electrical, plumbing, and sprinkler system repairs; observes/oversees farm site activities and operations and reports unusual activities or problem situations to proper authority; maintains records in breeding and furrowing dates of farm animals/livestock prepares routine reports and correspondence regarding assigned functions and activities; Plant, cultivates, prunes, shapes, trims, waters and sprays trees, shrubs, plants and hedges; plant, fertilizes, waters, mows and cares for lawns; operates and maintains hand power tools and equipment including power mowers, power clippers, roto-tillers and other maintenance equipment/tools; uses hand tools to work soil and to remove weeds, undergrowth and debris from school grounds and landscaped areas; sweeps walkways, driveways and picks up other debris; rakes and hoes weeds; applies pesticides, herbicides to grounds and garden areas for pest/weed controls purposes; cleans sprinklers and irrigation systems and assists in the installation and repair of irrigation systems; cleans and maintains drainage areas; mows, drags, chalks, lines and marks athletic fields for scheduled events.

Will perform general grounds maintenance work; maintains hoses, supplies, tools and equipment in proper condition; assists with general custodial maintenance work as required; sets up portable bleachers for athletic events and special assemblies; reports unsafe hazards and conditions to appropriate authority; may direct the work of student assistants or other temporary help; performs related duties as required.



EXPERIENCE

Three years of farming experience is desirable. One year of paid experience in grounds keeping, landscape or general labor work is preferred. One year of experience as a bus driver or truck driver.

MUST POSSESS AND MAINTAIN A VALID AND APPROPRIATE CALIFORNIA DRIVER'S LICENSE AND A CALIFORNIA SPECIAL DRIVER CERTIFICATE. MUST SUBMIT A RECENT DMV (3 YEAR MINIMUM) DRIVING RECORD WITH APPLICATION.

A PRE-EMPLOYMENT MEDICAL ASSESSMENT AND A CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK WILL BE REQUIRED OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL BE TRAINED AND RESPONSIBLE FOR THE KERN HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT'S NEEDS WITH REGARDS TO ASBESTOS AND HAZARDOUS MATERIALS. MUST POSSESS AND MAINTAIN A CALIFORNIA DRIVER'S LICENSE.

DUTIES OF POSITION: To perform general grounds maintenance and gardening work at an assigned school site(s) in the District. Employees in this classification receive direct to general supervision from a Custodial Plant Supervisor or his/her designate within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job classification performs a variety of general grounds, gardening and maintenance duties in the upkeep of assigned school sites and related areas.; transport students to and from school within a designated route(s) and to ensure the safety of the students while passengers in the school vehicle. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from the Transportation Supervisor or school site administrator within a well-defined framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class is responsible for the safe operation of a school bus. Ensuring the safety of student passengers while meeting established bus schedule; maintain a school farm site, operate and maintain farm equipment, and clean and maintain farm grounds. To perform a wide variety of maintenance, grounds keeping and general farming functions at an assigned school farm site within the District. This job class functions very independently and requires special knowledge and skills in the application of farming and livestock methods, practices, and techniques. Employees in this classification direct and supervise the work of others in a lead supervisory capacity.
