The Athletics Academic Success Advisor is responsible for providing proactive academic support for Henderson State University student-athletes. This position will assist in supporting athletes in their endeavor to improve/enhance their skills to achieve academic progress toward graduation.

The position monitors compliance with all University, Conference and NCAA rules and regulations governing the intercollegiate athletics operation. The selected candidate will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation and policy changes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Meet with student-athletes multiple times throughout each semester to ensure they are successfully navigating each phase of their college career.

Assist students in the development of an educational plan including choosing a program of study and/or clarifying educational goals and monitoring their progress.

Provide students with information about alternatives, limitations, and consequences (both academic and NCAA eligibility) of academic decisions.

Partner with various on-campus departments to ensure student success and retention (i.e.: faculty, financial aid, student accounts, registrar's office, housing, student health and counseling)

Work with student-athletes throughout the registration process each semester ensuring that the course load is appropriate and balanced between in-season of competition and out of season of competition. Oversee that all courses are counting towards NCAA Progress Toward Degree (PTO) and graduation requirements.

Work with HSU Athletics Compliance Officer to ensure student athletes are meeting all NCAA academic requirements for eligibility. If a student is not in compliance, provide a plan to get them back in good standing for NCAA eligibility.

Conduct grade checks on all student athletes throughout each semester. Collaborate with student athletes and coaches on strategies and plans for student's academic success.

Coordinate with the admissions office and coaches regarding rosters and incoming student athletes in preparation for Heart Start (freshmen orientation). Meet with students and parents one-on-one during the Heart Start events for registration.

Meet with potential student athletes during various phases of the recruiting process as requested by coaching staff.

Aid in various game day responsibilities as directed by the Director of Athletics.

Serve as Game Day administrator when needed.

Serve as a liaison between athletic staff and academic staff/faculty.

Submit academic nominations each term for various GAC, NCAA and other athletic academic awards and honors societies.

Provide coaching staff with academic schedules for their student athletes each semester and work to ensure that academic and athletic schedules will conflict as little as possible.

Maintain athletic rosters for each of the fourteen sports in the Banner System.

Oversee the Cabe Student-Athletic Success Center and Cabe student-athlete workers.

Plan and implement Cabe Student-Athlete Workshop Series each semester.

Serve as co-advisor of the campus Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries incorporating complex, highly technical information.

Advanced organizational and leadership skills.

Demonstrated computer competency with word processing systems and the ability to student records system.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.

1-2 years athletic academic advising experience preferred.

Working knowledge of Banner, NCAA Compliance Assistant and Navigate preferred.

One year of full-time college employment experience working with enrollment services (academic advisement, registration, admissions, or financial aid), or student services related experience (i.e., high school counseling).
