Overview of Besant Hill School

Besant Hill School of Happy Valley is a non-sectarian, coeducational boarding and day college preparatory school for grades 9-12, with a focus on a college preparatory community that celebrates each individual student through a rigorous academic program, and an emphasis on creativity, divergent thinking, and environmental sustainability. Since 1946 the school has been teaching students how to think, not what to think. The School is located on 520 acres in the resort village of Ojai, California.

Job Title: DIRECTOR OF SUSTAINABILITY

Reports to: Head of School

Position Description

The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Assist in Energy and Resource Management
• Work in Partnership to Integrate Sustainability into the school's Curriculum
• Assist in Enhancing the Natural Environment of the School
• Develop Community Partnerships
• Facilitate the implementation and assessment of the BHS Strategic Plan
• Provide collaborative input as a part of the Administrative Team regarding sustainability budget, programming, curriculum, and practice
• Collaborate with the Head of School, administrators, staff, faculty, and students toward the development of environmentally sustainable practices, culture, and policies for school operations.
• Provide information-based professional development opportunities regarding environmental sustainability education, curriculum, and practice to BHS faculty and staff
• Develop environmental sustainability outreach opportunities that inform and incorporate the extended BHS community, the greater Ojai Valley, regional independent schools, and member schools of the California and National Associations of Independent Schools
• Facilitate Besant Hill's charter membership in the Green Schools Alliance and our role as California Regional Contact for the National Green Schools Alliance
• Oversee and maintain the school's Bio-swale
• Oversee the care of the school's garden and fruit trees and supply commons with produce
• Teach 3.5 sections, including AP Environmental Science
• Work as a part of the school's Residential Duty Team
• Collaborate with other administrators in all other areas of administrative responsibility and duty
  • Member of Besant Hill School Leadership Team
  • Work with a small group of administrators and faculty members to review recommended operational practices regarding the fulfillment of the school's environmental sustainability plan
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School
