Overview of Besant Hill School

Besant Hill School of Happy Valley is a non-sectarian, coeducational boarding and day college preparatory school for grades 9-12, with a focus on a college preparatory community that celebrates each individual student through a rigorous academic program, and an emphasis on creativity, divergent thinking, and environmental sustainability. Since 1946 the school has been teaching students how to think, not what to think. The School is located on 520 acres in the resort village of Ojai, California.

Description of Instructional Support Program:

The Instructional Support Program (ISP) teaches students who they are as learners and how to discover their unique path to academic success. Through the teaching of metacognitive strategies and executive functioning skills, students learn about they learn and develop a growth mindset and learning strategies that will help them to achieve success in school. The ISP program works in conjunction and support of the school's college preparatory academic program and is staffed by Besant Hill teachers. There are three levels to the ISP program designed to decrease in support as students gain and demonstrate mastery of learning strategies. Students will receive instruction in organization, time management, self-advocacy, and academic subject area assistance, as well as access to and instruction for assistive technology. ISP students leave the program with positive habits of learning and are prepared to enter the competitive learning environment of college and beyond.

Position Description

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Consistent communication with ISP parents, teaching faculty, and school administration
  • Manage and train ISP teaching staff
  • Plan and execute ISP curriculum
  • Develop individualized ISP plans in support of student accommodations
  • Participate as a member of the school's admissions committee
  • Participate as a member of the school's student support team
  • Support the teachers in best practices for working with a diverse population of learners
  • To work with the College Counselor to support the college admission process for all ISP students
  • To serve as the school's SSD coordinator and apply for accommodations for qualifying exams and to administer exams as needed
  • To plan and lead ISP Plan meetings with families and teaching faculty during Family Weekend
  • To lead by example and model the expected tone for the school
  • To work as a part of our Residential Life Program
  • To support the school and its leadership and to participate and support school-wide events
  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School
