Position Overview and Responsibilities

St. John's seeks a long-term, high school substitute social studies teacher to cover a family leave from September 1, 2024 to December 16, 2024. Social studies faculty members in the High School at St. John's teach five sections and may be assigned an additional supervisory duty. Classes meet five times within a seven-day rotating schedule.

We seek a teacher who promotes curiosity and inquiry among students, engages all learners, uses technology as a vehicle for learning gains, and works with students to connect content to the real world in the classroom setting.

Education and Experience

  • Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree in history, social studies, or a related field.
  • Previous teaching experience in high school or middle school is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diversity of learning styles and learners. Physical Requirements (with or without accommodations):
    • Standing/sitting for long periods of time.
    • Must be capable of adapting to frequent changes in position throughout the workday.
    • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
    • Use of hands and fingers for manipulation, and using computer keyboard, educational tools, and perform first aid and CPR.
    • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and distance vision. All members of the faculty are expected to give witness to the Xaverian and Catholic mission of St. John's Preparatory School by acting as servant leaders capable of modeling and actively promoting Xaverian and Catholic values. In addition to classroom teaching responsibilities, we encourage all members of the faculty to be involved in the life of the school beyond the classroom through a wide range of co-curricular, intramural, and interscholastic programs.
