How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

An Instructional Designer follows instructional design and adult learning principles to develop engaging learning solutions (ILT, eLearning, micro learning, mobile, etc.) that will enhance the skills and competencies of Mechanic Technicians within Bus Maintenance. This position works with the Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to create instructionally sound materials using proven processes and models created for adult learners. While following an Instructional Systems Design (ISD) model, this individual will be able to use a variety of strategies to deliver training to include Instructor Led Training (ILT), videos, eLearning, performance support tools, collaborative learning, etc. Ultimately, improving performance on the job will be primary purpose of this individual.

What you would do in this job

1. Conduct a training needs analysis with stakeholders and customers:

  • Conduct a full gap analysis with stakeholders to gather training needs and requirements.
  • Work closely with subject matter experts to create course outlines, syllabi, performance objectives, instructor/student guides, classroom slides, eLearning, performance support tools and evaluations.
  • Conduct stakeholders meeting and incorporate feedback into design.

2. Design and develop curriculums for all employees within Bus Maintenance:

  • Work closely with subject matter experts to create instructor/student guides, classroom slides, eLearning, performance support tools and evaluations.
  • Create project plans and manage multiple priorities with multiple deadlines.
  • Use eLearning tools to develop online courses, processes, simulations and assessments.

3. Evaluate the training impact on the individual, department and organization:

  • Define, measure and document program effectiveness.
  • Continually evaluate course effectiveness and update materials as needed.
  • Distribute assessment tools and collect/record data for analysis.

4. Serve as SME on the instructional systems design process:

  • Conduct quality assurance and peer reviews on all design and instructional materials.
  • Mentor and coach team members to increase instructional design and development capability.
  • Provide direction and act as a project manager to external training vendors.

5. Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned:

  • Seek out industry trends on new training tools and strategies.
  • Seek out industry knowledge of maintenance systems.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Any of the following combinations of experience (working in a training department focused on adult learning and instructional design/development, preferably for a technical environment) and completed education (in Instructional Design and Technology, Education, Adult Education, Training, or a related field):

  • High school diploma/GED with seven (7) years of experience.
  • Associates degree with five (5) years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree with three (3) years of experience.
  • Masters degree with one (1) year of experience.

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications):

  • Experience working in a technical training environment.
  • Experience working in a union environment and with a diverse workforce.
  • Two (2) years of experience using eLearning software (authorizing content - Articulate 360 is preferred) in an adult learning or technical training environment.
  • Two (2) year experience working with a Learning Management System (LMS) in an adult learning or technical training environment.
  • Master's degree in Instructional Design.

What knowledge, skills, and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:

  • Knowledge of current adult learning principles, training techniques, facilitation techniques, curriculum design and metrics.
  • Highly motivated, self-directed and results driven.
  • Skilled in work quality and consistency and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with SMEs to develop technical training.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan/schedule and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships in and out of the department.
  • Ability to use eLearning software (authorizing content - Articulate 360 is preferred).
  • Ability to use and work with a Learning Management System (LMS) in an adult learning or technical training department.
  • Ability to work in a union environment.
