Job Description

Counseling Services at the University of Nevada, Reno is seeking a dedicated and passionate Graduate Assistant to work 20 hours per week. The successful candidate will work closely with the Program Director for Outreach and Community Relations and the Administrative Assistant 4 - Outreach Support Specialist to enhance mental health awareness on campus.

This position offers a unique opportunity for a graduate student pursuing a degree in a mental health-related field, such as Clinical Psychology, Counseling and Educational Psychology, Social Work, Community Health Sciences, and Public Health.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and Deliver Workshops:
    • Design, develop, and facilitate interactive and engaging workshops aimed at teaching essential skills for improving mental well-being.
    • Tailor content to address the unique needs and challenges faced by the campus community, ensuring the workshops are informative and impactful.

  • Provide Mental Health Support:
    • Offer one-on-one mental health support and guidance during Let's Talk drop-in consultations.
    • Utilize your skills to provide immediate assistance, address concerns, and connect students with appropriate resources for ongoing support.

  • Participate in Outreach Events:
    • Actively engage in campus outreach events to promote mental health awareness.
    • Collaborate with other departments and student organizations to plan, organize, and execute events that highlight the importance of mental health and well-being.

  • Create Informative Materials:
    • Develop, design, and distribute a variety of educational materials for Counseling Services outreach events.
    • Ensure the materials are accurate, visually appealing, and effectively communicate key mental health messages to the campus community.

  • Coordinate Peer Educator Program:
    • Oversee the mental health peer educator program by utilizing the Certified Peer Educator structure established by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).
    • Recruit, train, and mentor peer educators to effectively deliver mental health programming and support their peers.

  • Assist with Office Coverage:
    • Provide coverage and support at the outreach satellite office located in Great Basin Hall.
    • Assist students seeking services, and ensure a welcoming and professional environment for all visitors.
Required Qualifications
  • Candidate must be enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno
  • To be eligible for an assistantship, candidate must:
    • Be admitted to a degree-granting program and maintain good academic standing with an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
    • Be continuously enrolled in at least 6 graduate-level credits level) throughout the assistantship.

  • Candidate must be confident in public speaking with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Candidate must be proficient in software tools such as Zoom, Canva, and PowerPoint.
  • Candidate must have the ability to complete tasks with creativity, independence, and initiative, while maintaining accountability to report to the supervisor regularly.
  • Candidate must have the ability to professionally represent Counseling Services through effective communication and collaboration within the center, the Student Services Division, the university community, and the public.
