Plant Operations

What you will do

Johnson Controls is developing the next generation of smart and connected products with a full range of systems and digital solutions, for Industrial Refrigeration applications. As a Design Specialist I, you will be a member of our YPS custom product development team. In this role, you will have an influence on products from concept to customer shipment for our custom engineered YPS Process System packages. The drawings and documentation you develop, and supply will be the details for the package assembly in our manufacturing plants. In this role you get to work on a variety of projects that range in both size and complexity. Your design sessions can take anywhere from a few hours to weeks of work detailing the project design, providing you with a sense of satisfaction when your designs are brought to life.

How you will do it
  • Perform a variety of detailed assignments for creating and developing design documents for an advanced technical product using AutoCAD 2016 or higher in 2D.
  • Use of 3D software packages Bentley and Inventor for creating product models with other computer assisted design/drafting software to develop and document designs.
  • Preparation of Bill of Materials using a computerized BOM system and release documents to production control.
  • Translate concepts and ideas from sketches, marked prints or verbal instruction into drawings, models and bills of material using standard company format.
  • Effectively use outside contact with suppliers, manufacturers, customers and other JCI operating units as required.
  • Analyze engineering sketches, specifications, data, and drawings to determine design factors such as size, shape, and relationship of parts.
  • Compile and analyze data to correct deficiencies and/or eliminate fabrication issues.
  • Use sketches to record measurements, ideas, and observations.
  • Check dimension of parts, materials to be used, and interrelationship of parts.
  • Establish standard designs for expected product lines.
  • Perform engineering calculations following standard techniques and procedures, utilizing spreadsheets and other software.
  • Learn and apply developed product standards, regulatory codes, and project specification details to the product designs.
  • Maintain shop contact and participate in meetings.
  • As needed provide support to the salesforce, factory production, laboratory, service, applications, and marketing teams located locally and sometimes globally.
  • Use sophisticated technical processes and standards developed for our industry to solve difficult problems to projects while creating practical solutions.
  • Use our ECN and SAP systems to maintain parts and materials needed for our custom designed projects.
  • Work to established schedules to meet internal and external delivery of engineering documents.
  • Plan your workdays to be responsible for the on-time completion of assigned project details.
  • Lead major tasks within a project while working closely with other designers and drafters in a team effort to generate product layout concepts and system configurations.
  • Continuously increase your expertise on all aspects of product design, theory, construction, operation, and applications.
  • Strive for continuous improvement and teamwork in local and global product development and process environments.
What we look for
  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or an Associate degree in Engineering or related science with 2 years of drafting and design experience, or seven (7) years of related drafting and design work experience will be considered.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite Applications (Work, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint) as well as AutoCAD, is required. Knowledge in SAP is helpful but not required.
  • Previous experience in 3D solids design, experience using (e.g. Bentley, Inventor, Creo, Solidworks, Fusion 360, or similar) software experience is a plus.
  • Experience with management databases is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Mechanically inclined with the ability to visualize how parts fit together.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Understanding usage of some general business practices.
  • Must be highly organized, able to work within strict deadlines.
