Location type: Remote

Reporting to: Chief Operations Officer

Manages: One

Annual salary: $110-130K USD

Contract type: Permanent

Working hours: Full time

Candidate level: Senior Management

Background

Global Fishing Watch is an international, non-profit

organisation committed to advancing ocean governance through

increased transparency. We create and publicly share knowledge

about human activity at sea to enable fair and sustainable use of

our ocean. Our major focus is on commercial fishing because it is

the most widespread human activity at sea, the most impactful on

ocean health, and the most crucial for global livelihoods and food

security. We believe human activity at sea should be common

knowledge in order to safeguard the global ocean commons for the

common good of all.

As the lead of a small and newly established team, the Head,

Finance Business Partnering role is a hands-on position with an

additional focus on devising and implementing a finance business

partnering function that supports Global Fishing Watch's long-term

growth and success.

Purpose of role

Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, the purpose of the

role will be to establish and lead a growing team responsible for

the beginning-to-end financial oversight of our grant

portfolio.

As part of the operations department, the newly created Finance

Business Partnering Team provides strategic, finance-based insight

to internal stakeholders, including the program, fundraising and

operational teams.

The Head, Finance Business Partnering will be responsible for

proposal budgeting, financial monitoring and delivery of data-led

analysis to drive effective decision-making and compliance. Working

closely with internal stakeholders, the role maintains and supports

Global Fishing Watch's financial policies, systems, controls and

procedures, ensuring they meet current needs and support long-term

organisational resilience, and foster best practices throughout the

organisation.

The Qualified candidate will have a proven track record of

financial grant management, analysis and reporting in a global

organisation, as well as a demonstrated ability to build and

support high functioning teams and develop effective relationships

with non-financial stakeholders.

Primary responsibilities

Financial grants and projects management

  • Working with program leads, fundraising, and finance team

members, develop budgets to support fundraising and grant proposals

and renewals, ensuring a smooth transition upon grant inception,

    and supporting financial life-of-grant management.
  • Oversee all financial aspects of grant inception,

implementation and closure, including due diligence, contracts,

sub-granting, reporting procedures, variance analysis, expenditure,

grant payments, formal budget modifications, extension requests and

    grant audits.
  • Maintain grant database, reporting schedule and live financial

    forecast.
  • Support Grant Managers throughout the grant lifecycle, ensuring

controls and expenditures are compliant with internal and external

policies, providing analysis and advice on potential budget changes

    and ensuring these are documented.
  • Work with the central finance team to ensure up-to-date grant

information is reflected in organisational budgets, forecasts,

treasury planning and financial reporting, and support ongoing risk

    management.
  • Support the successful delivery of grants by leading regular

calls with Grant Managers and other appropriate stakeholders to

review grant spending/forecast against budget and milestone

delivery and elevate any issues in a timely manner.
  • Lead the financial reporting to funders' requirements,

collaborating with project leads, subgrantees and Finance Team as

    needed.
  • Support the Operations Team as needed, including sub-granting,

    contracts, payments, invoices and audits.

Internal expert – financial management best

practices

  • Review and improve existing finance processes, seeking new and

better ways of supporting a changing and growing organisation.
  • Serve as point person for project and department leads in

    helping manage their project budgets.
  • Provide financial training and capacity building to internal

    stakeholders as appropriate.

Leadership and management

  • Working closely with the Chief Operations Manager, establish

roles, responsibilities and best practices for the new finance

business partnering function within Global Fishing Watch.
  • Supervise Business Partnering staff, providing leadership,

guidance and feedback and supporting teams to resolve complex

    problems.
  • Establish strategic goals and objectives and key results (OKRs)

with team members, manage performance and track delivery.
  • Devise and implement appropriate allocation of grant portfolio

within the team to ensure internal consistency and development of

    in-house expertise.
  • Maintain the department's budget.
  • Develop, coordinate, and enforce systems, policies and

    procedures.
  • Ensure a safe, secure, welcoming, and legal work

    environment.

Qualifications and experience

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, economics or related field with

in a nonprofit environment, including 2+ years of team

    management.
