Post-Doctoral Scientist/Engineer Oligonucleotide Synthesis Process Design and Development

Indianapolis, Indiana, United States Eli Lilly and Company Full time

At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We're looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.

Within Lilly Research Laboratories, Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) is involved in key activities for the development of synthetic active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) from pre-clinical phases through commercialization of drug substances and drug products. We are looking for a creative and energetic chemical engineer to collaborate with a growing team comprised of chemists, analysts, and engineers aimed at development and optimization of oligonucleotides synthesis. A goal of this post doc role is to gain a better understanding of solid phase oligo synthesis (SPOS) phosphoroamidite activation and coupling kinetics.

The hypothesis is that the activating agent molar equivalents, phosphoroamidite molar equivalents, and the coupling reaction time are all higher than optimal, phosphoroamidite activation times are shorter than optimal, and coupling reaction temperature is not optimal, for most of the coupling reactions in standard SPOS. The goal of this post doc is to gain a better understanding of solid phase oligo synthesis (SPOS) phosphoroamidite activation and coupling kinetics. Industry wide, little is known about actual reaction times, or the impact of temperature on the activation or coupling kinetics. There is not much in the literature on SPOS coupling kinetics, largely because they are so difficult to measure. The outcome for the post doc is that this work should result in improved processes with lower cost and lower environmental footprint and should result in publications. This will be an important contribution to the field.

Top candidates for this position will be encouraged to:

Identify scientific projects/process improvements where solutions are developed through interactions with diverse talent across the larger organization.Demonstrate high learning agility regarding grasping and exploiting new scientific concepts and methods; strong skills related to automated reactor platforms; be able to apply these learnings to a rapidly evolving portfolio of RNAi assets.Engage the external environment through presentations, publication at external symposia or consortia. These activities are expected to advance the internal Lilly portfolio and help create new opportunities.Embrace diversity of thought, background and experience to deliver innovative solutions. Possess strong communication (oral, written), organizational, and leadership skills.Apply scientific method through ambiguity, welcome and rapidly adjust to change, and identify and drive superior methods to accomplish tasks.Basic Requirements: PhD in chemical engineering or a related field.Additional Skills/Preferences:Experience with developing chemical processes.Experience with modeling and simulation tools, data analytics, and predictive analytics.Experience with online and offline analytical techniques and process analytical technologies (PAT).Interpersonal skills and a sustained tendency for collaboration.Ability to prioritize multiple activities and handle ambiguity.Ability to influence others to promote a positive work environment.Understanding and awareness of the external scientific and regulatory landscape.Demonstrated technical proficiency; to create ideas for future work plans.Established external publication record.Additional Information:Travel: 0 to 10%Position Location: Indianapolis, IN; Lilly Technology Center-North (LTC-N).This position is not permanent. It is for a fixed term position up to a maximum of 4 years.About Eli Lilly's Postdoctoral Scientist Program When it comes to research and development, our goal is to discover and deliver innovative medicines that make life better for people around the world. It's challenging, expensive and often filled with failure. But even when we fail, we advance medical science and understanding by learning more about diseases, biology and chemistry – ultimately bringing new solutions one step closer to reality. Over the course of our history, we have shed light on some of the toughest health care problems known to man – diabetes, heart disease, infectious diseases, neuroscience disorders, cancer and more. We could not pursue this without our research and development team. Postdoctoral scientists help us continue this pursuit. During your experience you will get: Top industry research experience.Mentoring by some of Lilly's top scientists. Laboratory and classroom training and education to foster your development.Collaboration and networking across dozens of postdoctoral scientists and other researchers.
