Genomic Medicine Faculty
The UAB Department of Genetics seeks faculty members to join a program in Genomic Medicine. The successful candidates will be an MD, MD/PhD or PhD and able to sustain a grant-supported clinical and/or laboratory research program in genomic medicine.
For clinicians, up to 20% effort seeing patients in genomic medicine-related clinics can be supported, in which case board certification in clinical genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics is strongly encouraged. Faculty rank is open, depending on the experience of the candidate and external grant funding of the candidate. Faculty rank, salary, and tenure status commensurate with experience and qualifications of the candidate and external grant funding of the candidate.
The UAB Department of Genetics has a robust program in genomic medicine, including an Undiagnosed Disease Program, the Alabama Genomic Health Initiative sponsored by the State of Alabama, and participation in several large NIH-funded consortia, including the All of Us Research Program, the eMERGE consortium, and the Clinical Sequencing Evidence-Generating Research (CSER) Consortium. We have a close collaboration with the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville, AL with the UAB-HudsonAlpha Center for Genomic Medicine.
There is also an active training program, including an undergraduate major in genetics and genomics, graduate training in genetics and genomics, a genetic counselor training program, a genetics residency program, and NHGRI-funded programs in genomic medicine, including a T32 in Genomic Medicine and SURE-GM, an R25-funded summer program for students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to spend one summer at HudsonAlpha followed by a second summer at UAB.

UAB Medicine is the third largest public academic medical center in the country, with more than 1,900 beds and almost 18,000 employees. UAB Hospital is the centerpiece of the UAB Health System and is the teaching hospital for the UAB School of Medicine. Situated among major research centers and clinics, UAB Hospital provides patients with a complete range of primary and specialty care services, as well as the most up-to-date treatments and innovations in health care. In addition to UAB Hospital, UAB Medicine includes The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital, UAB Callahan Eye Hospital, as well as several primary and specialty care clinics, a dozen member and affiliate hospitals within Alabama, more than 10 cancer associates in the Southeast, and the Viva Health HMO.
