Position Purpose

RLI is seeking an energetic and collaborative leader and individual contributor for our growing Data Engineering team. At RLI, we understand data is a core asset, and this position will play a key role in how our organization harvests data for business operations and competitive advantage across a variety of insurance products.

As Manager of Data Engineering, you will be actively leading and executing the design, development, testing and integration of data pipelines and curated data assets to serve our enterprise analytics and reporting needs. You will develop a strong understanding of RLI's business and the strategic direction for Data & Analytics to align local work efforts with team goals through effective coordination of available resources. You will advocate industry best practices for data governance and seek opportunities for improvement related to implementations and processes.

In addition to guiding your team, you will be responsible and accountable for your own implementation tasks related to data ingestion and transformation. You will ensure security and quality in yours and your team's deliverables. You will embrace continuous learning by staying current on the latest innovations and in working with on-prem and cloud technologies.

You will report to the Director of Technology within our Data & Analytics practice and actively contribute to the direction and planning against our Data & Analytics vision.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Creates a highly collaborative working environment that fosters team alignment, efficiency and accountability.
  • Provides training opportunities and ongoing guidance to the team to help in professional development relating to behaviors, standards, technologies and agile processes.
  • Drives timely delivery of solutions that meet high quality standards and user expectations.
  • Designs and builds data pipelines: create, maintain, and optimize workloads from development to production.
  • Develops comprehensive understanding of enterprise data architecture and associated data flows for legacy and new solutions.
  • Responsible for the accessibility and reliability of organizations data, conforming to RLI security standards and practices.
  • Executes analysis and remediation of root causes, including deficiencies in technology, process, or resource capabilities.
  • Performs coding, debugging, testing, and troubleshooting throughout the development process.
  • Collaborates with other IT managers, product owners, business analysts and business stakeholders.
  • Contributes to and executes implementation plans, integrating activities with the Data & Analytics strategy and direction.
  • Ensures adherence to enterprise standards, goals, processes and policies.
  • Initiates action to assure delivery of various aspects of projects, process improvement or work efforts.

Education & Experience

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, business administration or related field.
  • 8+ years of data engineering experience
  • 3+ years of related experience leading/managing technical teams in an insurance business setting.

Knowledge, Skills, & Competencies

  • Proven leadership and management skills with the ability to direct and oversee the work of others.
  • Experience developing technical talent through coaching and mentoring.
  • Expert understanding of ETL solutions, moving and transforming large data sets to Azure or AWS from on-prem and other cloud solutions.
  • Experience working with structured and unstructured data and big data cloud platforms including Snowflake, MongoDB, BigQuery, etc.
  • Experience with transmission and transformation of API data formats, including XML and JSON.
  • Knowledge of programming languages, including SQL.
  • Working, technical knowledge of data modeling, architecture, and warehousing.
  • Effectively communicates, verbally and written, findings and recommendations within a hybrid operating environment.
  • Experience working with onshore and offshore development teams with strong listening and interpretation skills.
  • Must be highly adaptable, resolve ambiguity, and demonstrate intellectual curiosity.
  • Adept in agile methodologies.
