PCSU URBAN FORESTRY EDUCATION LIAISON – ID#

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Urban Forestry Project, located in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $5,000 - $6,000/Mon.


DUTIES: Develops, implements and maintains educational programs to enhance school (student, staff, faculty) understanding of the value of trees and how to care for them and to improve campus landscapes. Coordinates school groups in hands-on work. Coordinates and collaborates project partners to identify and serve priority schools to receive training on tree care. Drives to schools and project sites. Consults and collaborates to identify and make available place-based tree lesson plans and curricula that align with Hawaiʻi DOE academic standards. Develops and updates relevant tree care documents for schools as needed. Identifies, tracks, and reports relevant data to support project evaluation. Oversees, tracks, and reports progress and program accomplishments to stakeholders (quarterly), and to DOFAW/USFS (semi-annually). Creates a final report summarizing all progress, accomplishments, and suggested next steps. Coordinates with local nurseries to secure appropriate saplings for planting at schools. Supports capacity building of existing school nurseries through technical assistance on improving phytosanitation, appropriate seed sourcing and plant selection, and other education as needed. Provides administrative and technical expertise to support schools in achieving "Tree Campus K-12" accreditation through the Arbor Day Foundation.


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Botanical, Biological, Environmental Science, or related field.

EXPERIENCE

Three to five (3-5) years working with schools or other educational settings. Experience working with custodians, grounds keepers, or field crews. Experience in urban tree planting and care and ability to teach tree planting and care skills. Experience communicating cross culturally with diverse audiences through writing, public speaking, or engagement. Experience communicating with Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander communities.

KNOWLEDGE

Strong knowledge of Hawai'i's common tree species (e.g., native, Polynesian-introduced, non-native, invasive) planting, and their occurrence in urban Hawai'i or similar areas. Knowledge of how to address common tree health problems.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Excellent organizational, planning, leadership, and communication skills (written, oral, and interpersonal), as well as strong problem-solving, decision-making, and process management skills. Skillful at leading and communicating with groups of diverse ages, abilities and experiences. Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs and Google equivalent. Ability to manage program budgets efficiently. Ability to initiate, plan, coordinate, and implement urban and community forestry outreach and education. Ability to coordinate volunteers. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain Certified Arborist credential from professional organization within twelve (12) months of hire.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike up to five (5) miles to plant and maintain trees in urban and community spaces such as schools, farms, and community forests.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working with underserved and at-risk populations. Experience in grounding programs in equity and justice. Specialized experience in working with Hawai'i public schools and with non-profit and civic organizations involved in urban and community forestry. Experience working on urban and community forestry projects in Hawai'i. Working knowledge of community agroforestry systems.
