Washington, Washington, D.C., United States Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Full time
The Foundation

We are the largest nonprofit fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world. Founded on a simple premise: people everywhere, regardless of identity or circumstances, should have the chance to live healthy, productive lives. We believe our employees should reflect the rich diversity of the global populations we aim to serve. We provide an exceptional benefits package to employees and their families which include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with no premiums, generous paid time off, paid family leave, foundation-paid retirement contribution, regional holidays, and opportunities to engage in several employee communities. The Team
The Channels & Audience Engagement team is responsible for managing and/or supporting the bulk of the foundation's flagship and ELT channels, the foundation's website, our email program, and our web-based storytelling platform, Ideas. Our work requires constant and close collaboration with stakeholders across and outside the foundation. Channels & Audience engagement sits within the broader Global Content & Campaigns team and, in turn, under the overarching Global Communications Division.

The Senior Communication Officer, Email and Web Content Strategy is a key member of the Channels and Engagement team in the Communications Division. The SCO leads editorial and technical strategy for the foundation's email subscriber programs, The Optimist and Portraits of Human Potential, as well primary digital storytelling platform, Ideas, which exists within The role involves a combination of high-level strategy and editorial direction, while also being "in-the-weeds" on execution as needed, whether that's oversight of email production and QA handled by our email agency partners, or working closely with our internal web producer to ensure every detail is ironed out for web publishing.

You should have expertise in three key areas:
  • Email and content marketing, particularly for an audience of influential individuals within the global health and development space (such as policymakers, government officials, media, academics).
  • Tech familiarity and expertise with coordinating and applying CRM, CMS, and email marketing systems.
  • And strong editorial judgement and a sense for stories, including experience working with writers and driving a strong editorial voice.

Candidates should also possess a strong instinct for project management, an ability to navigate a highly matrixed organizational setup with many partners; and should be able to confidently advocate for their editorial and strategic point of view while still soliciting and parsing input.

We anticipate about 20 percent of this role's time be on program strategy, execution, and insights; 40 percent on story development and working with writers, content team, and handling input across internal partners; and 40 percent on email/Ideas production management, including time spent in CRM and email software management. You should be equally comfortable working at a high strategic level as they are writing subject lines or building email sends.

  • Supervise key agency and vendor partners to regularly produce email sends, including being responsible for email content, building modules within email software, and leading approvals within the organization.
  • Manage a team of freelance writers to develop appropriate stories for our Ideas platform, ensuring a strong editorial voice and storytelling lens across Ideas content. Coordinate copy editing and deliver final copy for publishing.
  • Work with content leads and the web producer to ensure visual and narrative cohesion to all published storytelling content.
  • Act as institutional authority on email marketing standard processes and share expertise.
  • Work with the foundation regional and country offices to ensure thoughtful global expansion and representation of email programs and Ideas stories. Regular partner management with regions and local writers as an ongoing component of story development.

Successful candidates will enjoy and excel at working within matrixed and cross-functional teams. An understanding of the broader digital and communications landscape will be an asset, as well as having a strong sense of curiosity and excellent editorial judgment. Global experience is a plus.

Additional qualifications include:
