Job Summary and Qualifications

The Laboratory Specialist is responsible for specific departmental duties including specimen preparation, delivery, and accessioning; communicating with other departments within the hospital regarding correct specimen ordering and correction of incorrectly ordered tests; liaising with doctors and nurses regarding results, specialty testing, and continuation of care at other facilities; assisting pathologists with consultation send-outs, navigating specialty testing menus, and directing appropriate calls to their offices; providing additional assistance for special specimen requests from physicians within the hospital to ensure adequate patient care; daily workload assistance; recordkeeping; inventory control, preventive maintenance, quality control, clerical duties, etc.

Verifies identification of each specimen upon receipt and assigns accession numbers. Enters demographics into the computer system. Generates changes when necessary or requested. Adapts workflow processes to achieve high productivity and aid in TAT.

Performs departmental assigned duties.

Coordinate patient care with pathologists and other physicians.

Assists the organization by performing other duties as requested or required.
