Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach.

Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company's portfolio.

Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross' Nevada operations.

The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.

Job Description


Under the supervision of the Chief Metallurgist, the incumbent undertakes assorted fundamental research and development projects with an end objective of improvement of mill, crusher, heap-leach, ADR, and Refinery operating and maintenance efficiency.

The incumbent will introduce sound metallurgical practice to all process changes and recovery improvements and will support to the operational areas looking for more efficient process.

Incumbent will supervise all assigned Metallurgists and Metallurgical Technicians and conduct all required personnel reviews, safety meetings, safety inspections, and task observations while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross' values.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design and supervise plant sampling surveys, including proper sampling as required by the particular attributes of the unit operation being studied. Analyze the data extracted and make recommendations for change based on interpretation of the results using sound engineering principles.
  • Design and carry out laboratory process simulation tests using bench-scale grinding, flotation, leaching, and other related processes. Scale-up from bench-scale results. Design plant tests and organize and run these plant tests. Report on results of all tests.
  • Metallurgical accounting and control of gold inventories (solutions, carbons, ponds, tanks, pad, etc.)
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry practice and innovation and technological change.
  • Will write up procedures and SOP's for routine sampling and testing conducted in the process.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.
  • Meets or exceeds established performance expectations set by management.
  • Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance.
  • Works without risk or harm to self and others.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance required.
  • Helps develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned by supervisor.
Education and Experience

  • Accuracy and precise work is required.
  • Ensure that sound engineering practice and principles are used.
  • Requires an understanding of computer modeling.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in chemical or metallurgical engineering is preferred.
  • At least 5 years' experience required.
  • Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • General understanding of mining operations, as well a vast understanding of milling, heap leach and maintenance operations.
  • Working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, databases, and presentation software.
  • Knowledge in processing modelling software is preferred.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to work independently and also as a member of the management team.
  • Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills.
  • Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis.
  • Requires valid driver's license.
Reporting Relationships

  • May direct the work of project teams and/or task forces and provide training and guidance to entry level professionals
  • Typically reports to the Chief Metallurgist
