Elizabethtown College, located in southcentral Pennsylvania, seeks a highly motivated and experienced Visiting (Associate or Full) Professor or Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Actuarial Science (full-time, 9- month appointment; rank determined based on qualifications) to join our Mathematics faculty in the School of Business. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and advising undergraduate students in Actuarial Science, collaborating with math and business faculty on curriculum development and assessment, and contributing to the overall academic excellence of the School of Business. The preferred start date is August 1, 2024.

The Elizabethtown Actuarial Science major program provides students with all preparation needed to become an Associate of Society of Actuaries(SOA). Our program also covers most of the syllabus of the Casualty Actuarial Society. Our pass rate for SOA exams exceeds the nationwide pass rate. In addition to providing expert, personalized exam preparation, we also help students develop practical skills for effective workplace participation. We maintain high curricular standards for mathematical depth and introduce students to a wide variety of technological tools used by working professionals, such as Excel, R, SAS, and Python. We are proud to have one of the few actuarial sciences bachelor's degree programs in Pennsylvania

Job Duties

- Teaching undergraduate courses in Actuarial Science, including but not limited to long-term and short-term actuarial mathematics, financial mathematics, probability theory, and mathematical statistics.

- Advising undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science and helping them develop the necessary skills to become successful professionals.

- Collaborating with Mathematical Science and Business faculty on continued development of a well-established and successful Actuarial Science program that offers preparation for all Associate level SOA credentialing exams.

- Collaborating on the development and administration of assessments of student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.

- Maintenance of an active research and scholarly agenda, preferably involving undergraduate students.

- Engaging in professional development activities to increase teaching effectiveness and remain current with the latest developments in the field of Actuarial Science.

- Building and maintaining strong relationships with alumni and potential employers.

- Enhancing student recruitment and retention efforts in Actuarial Science.

-Contributing to the overall growth and success of the School of Business and Elizabethtown College by service, including membership on committees and/or councils.

Required Qualifications
  • Candidates should have actuarial credentials (Associate or Fellow) in either the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty Actuarial Society ; or be in the final stages of achieving associate status; and possess a minimum of a master's degree.
  • A strong commitment to quality teaching and advising at the undergraduate level is expected.
  • The successful candidate will be able to collaborate with Mathematics and Business faculty and contribute to our inclusive academic community.
  • The position also requires excellent communication skills and the ability to interact and work effectively with students, colleagues, and industry professionals.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with an advanced degree in Mathematics or a related field, and to those with teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

Experience with or demonstrated ability to teach, mentor, and support students from historically underrepresented groups in science is preferred.
