JOB TITLE:
Assay Lab Supervisor

The Assay Lab Supervisor interacts with mill operations, accounting, purchasing, mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, and mine technical departments.

This position supports processing, geology, and administration departments through analytical assay, quality assurance and control of analytical results, special projects and budget variance analyses.

JOB DUTIES/

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow safe work procedures and best practices.
  • Evaluates and updates laboratory procedures and methodologies.
  • Provides quality control measures and reviews and documents results.
  • Implements corrective actions when tolerance limits are exceeded.
  • Ensures sample integrity and chain of custody is maintained.
  • Ensures environmental compliance and quality of analytical work reported.
  • Resolves day to day operational problems related to equipment, process and personnel performance.
  • Maintains appropriate lab consumable inventories and complete timely orders.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with company management and contractors and be a capable project and task manager.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum ten (10) years of progressive "hands on" professional experience, preferably in the mining laboratory setting with three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Basic understanding of Project Management.
  • A valid driver's license.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

  • Knowledge of mining, copper flotation, and metallurgical processes preferred.
  • Capability of applying advanced statistical methods desirable.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Experience with method development.
  • Proficiency using analytical assay equipment and methodologies, including fire assay.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills with technical writing experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft excel, database management and LIMS.
  • Responsible for reviewing monthly costs, ensuring appropriate accounts are used and reporting deviations from budget to manager.
  • Responsible for capital requests and justifications for lab equipment replacements and upgrades.
  • Identifies and drives potential continuous improvement initiatives to improve lab analyses and turnaround time.

SUPERVISORY

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversight on the day-to-day laboratory operation and supervision of lab technicians.
  • Assigns and prioritizes work to staff, ensures proper crew placements and coverage.
  • Provides employees with guidance in handling problems and resolving escalated complaints.
  • Recruit, interview and select employees for lab technicians and leads.
  • Evaluates competency and performance of personnel, including recommending disciplinary actions or promotions.
  • Trains and orients all technicians according to progression plan.
  • Ensures lab technicians complete regular testing (lead, pulmonary function, and hearing).
  • Ensures timely reporting of payroll.
  • Ensure lab employees are following documented SOPs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Medium:
Exerting 20 to 70 lbs. of force occasionally and/or 10 to 25 lbs. of force frequently and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly. Physical demand requirements are greater than that required for Light Work.
