The Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology has an exciting opportunity for an Associate Scientist. The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities including authorship of scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.
  • Publishes in refereed journals in collaboration with department leadership or independently.
  • Supervises research employees and non-exempt staff.
  • Writes extramural proposals with approval of senior managing staff.
  • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.
  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.
  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for the faculty researchers, supervisors, and other relevant staff.
  • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).
  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree in relevant field

Minimum of 5 years experience in laboratory research

Experience with preclinical oncolytic virus work

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

Department Specific Functions

  • Responsible for supervising the daily functions and procedures related to assigned research projects and team, which includes the following:
  • Plan, conduct and assign to other research staff experiments related to characterization and development of novel oncolytic viruses targeting tumor and stromal cells in vitro and in vivo.
  • Direct and manage the research staff with lab techniques routinely done such as tissue culture, retroviral or lentiviral transduction of human or mouse cells, oncolytic virus design and rescue, routine molecular biology such as qPCR, western blots, preparation of RNA or DNA for gene expression profiling methylation studies or genomic analysis.
  • Responsible for orientation and training for new students, research associate and postdoctoral associates in laboratory procedures.
  • Oversee the organization of lists of reagents including antibodies, constructs, ShRNA, SiRNA, CRISPR, frozen cell lines, and monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies that are routinely used in the laboratory.
  • Responsible for developing, adapting and implementing new lab procedures.
  • Provide technical supervision to assigned research staff.
  • Perform complex and routine molecular biology and other laboratory procedures such including western blot, immuno-precipitation, protein expression, PCR, cloning, oncolytic viral engineering and rescue, apoptosis assays and micro-array studies.
  • Write up experimental results for submission of manuscripts and for scientific presentations using Power Point, and other graphics software as needed.
  • Responsible for writing reviews and book chapters along with the PI. Assisting the PI in writing grants for funding to the NIH and state agencies. Reviewing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Keep abreast of latest literature in the field and search for references to technical problems and keep up-to-date of the methods and techniques related to the specific field of research.
  • MS office, JMP, Endnote, and other software/programs relevant to laboratory research and analysis.
