IFC's Telecom, Media, Technology (TMT) Group within the Infrastructure Department invests in private sector companies globally.

IFC's TMT Group has a track record of successful investments in mobile telephony companies, submarine cables, broadband networks, independent tower companies and data centers.

IFC's TMT Group is unique for both its regional and global prospective on the TMT space, long-term approach to investments, ability to leverage the resources of the entire World Bank Group, as well as its commitment to maximizing the value of its portfolio companies through sustained assistance.

The Global TMT group sits within the Infrastructure and Natural Resources Department (INR).


The Global TMT group is looking for a Washington DC based (Associate) Investment Officer to support its new business sourcing and investment activities globally.

The selected candidate is expected to report to the Global TMT Manager, proactively supporting the group's mandate to deepen the scope, reach and impact of the global investments in the TMT sector.

Duties and Accountabilities

The responsibilities of the (Associate)

Investment Officer include but are not limited to:

  • Promote IFC's investments in the TMT sector globally and, in cooperation with the regional
    IFCteams, help build a strong pipeline of potential investment opportunities;
  • Contribute to the development and execution of TMT transactions with regional teams by supporting and/or leading company due diligence, valuation, credit risk assessment, financial analysis, and other relevant workstreams (e.g. Legal, E&S, etc.);
  • Address internal requests from senior management and the board on IFC's strategy on digital; draft and present memos and materials for management consideration;
  • Contribute to developing a strong upstream pipeline in the TMT sector and support regional teams in transforming early-stage opportunities into bankable projects;
  • Contribute to knowledge relevant to business development, market creation and innovation in the TMT sector; maintain a strong grasp of TMT sector trends and industry innovations;
  • Support senior team members and management in the development and implementation of TMT sector and sub-sector business strategies;
  • Work with global client relationship managers to support client engagement, including business development and portfolio work;
  • Overall, the candidate is expected to share time and effort across: (i) transaction development and execution; (ii) global knowledge for business and sector work; (iii) support origination and portfolio.
Selection Criteria

  • Master's degree in finance, economics, telecommunications, or similar relevant education.
  • At least 5+ years of relevant experience, preferably with at least 3 years at a development finance institution;
  • Strong quantitative skills with significant experience in financial analysis and modelling; ability to form sound opinions on companies' financial information and investment-related risks;
  • Experience in developing, structuring, and executing telecommunications sector transactions in emerging markets;
  • Experience in working upstream (i.e. pre-bankability stage);
  • Grasp of legal, technical, environmental, social, and other considerations in project and corporate finance.
  • Sound analytical and problem-solving skills; business judgment in screening/identifying potential investment opportunities;
  • Solid understanding of Telecom sector trends and key issues, and experience in working with different Telecom sub-sectors;
  • Effective teamwork in multi-cultural and multi-location environment and ability/experience in interacting effectively with colleagues at all levels.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills, with a track record of working across organizational boundaries;
  • Ability to interact directly and independently with clients and other external partners;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and ability to convey ideas and positions clearly; strong presentation skills;
  • International exposure, especially to the emerging markets, cultural sensitivity and willingness to travel;
  • Genuine and strong interest in and commitment to international development and to the WBG and IFC's mission, strategy and values.
