Job Summary

The Substation Technician will perform maintenance, construction, inspection, testing, and repair work on substation and underground equipment in accordance with acceptable standards and procedures. Additionally, the Substation Technician will operate test equipment to diagnose equipment problems and suggest corrective action.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate test equipment and use knowledge of equipment and the test procedure to implement results and provide suggestions for maintaining equipment based on the data.
  • Maintain, build, inspect, test, and repair substation equipment, including transformers, load tap changers, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, etc.
  • Excavate ditches for electrical conduits, ground mats, water lines, and underground cable installation.
  • Install network and padmount equipment, including electrical hardware in manholes and vaults. Perform work on energized secondary per safety rules and regulations.
  • Locate faulted or damaged cable and repair or replace, including repair of faults on burning secondary.
  • Load, transport, and unload electrical equipment and material using approved rigging methods. Repair, test, and refurbish distribution transformers.
  • Read, interpret, and work from schematics, wiring diagrams, written instructions, and equipment manufacturer's manuals.
  • Report on tests performed, equipment condition, work completed, and other items required to maintain equipment on the power system.
  • Operate EPB vehicles and aerial equipment and use various other tools and testing equipment.

Education and Experience

  • High school education or equivalent. An Associate's Degree in electrical engineering or completion of an approved Substation Technician Training Program.
  • A Journeyman Electrician License or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience using test equipment and procedures such as megger, doble, ratio tester, hi-pot, phase meters, winding resistance meters, etc.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, problem-solving, customer service, and basic math skills.
  • Familiar with the safety-related practices, procedures, and other safety requirements that pertain to this classification.

Certification(s) & Other Requirements

  • A "Class A" CDL Learner's Permit before hire and must be able to obtain a "Class A" Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of employment with tanker endorsements.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and follow simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to read and understand wiring diagrams, prints, and equipment manuals.
  • Ability to work overtime as requested for planned work or to respond to system emergencies. Must work 70% of available overtime in the department and a minimum of 16 hours straight when needed.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical operations in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Must also have the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
