Job Description
The Patient Care Associate in the Pediatrics Office Practice is charged with and responsible for:
- Maintains compliance with National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG).
- Identifies patient utilizing two patient identifiers, name and date of birth, during all encounters with patients, including phlebotomy and other specimen collection.
- Communicates issues that may affect patient and staff safety
- Complies with infection control practices such as hand washing, proper utilization of PPE, etc.
- Takes vital signs, height/weight and head circumference in pediatrics, records results, and reports abnormal findings to licensed professional.
- Chaperones provider during physical examination/evaluation of patients
- Maintains adequate supplies in unit, including examination rooms
- Ensures that supplies are valid and not expired.
- Assumes responsibility for the timely transport of specimen to laboratory
- Verifies specimen being delivered to the lab with lab personnel and ensures dual signature on specimen logbook.
- Assists in the preparation and positioning of patients for examination and procedures.
- Performs urine pregnancy test, urine dipstick and blood glucose, as applicable.
- Performs EKG, vision and hearing tests, and notifies licensed professionals of abnormal results.
- Prepares, labels and collects, various specimens for testing, including phlebotomy.
- Performs the necessary clerical duties involved in the process of a patient care visit, including but not limited to appointments, referrals, chart maintenance, and data entry.
- Performs the necessary documentation utilizing manual or electronic procedures.
- Administers Basic Life Support (BLS) during emergencies.
- Escorts and transfers patients to various departments as necessary.
- Maintains Infection Control standards to ensure patient/employee safety.
- Exhibits courteous and effective communication with all health care team members, patients and families with respect of cultural diversity.
- Maintains patient privacy in accordance with HIPAA rules and regulations.
1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and
2. Successful completion of a NYS Department of Health prescribed training program for Phlebotomy, satisfactory to the Laboratory Director; and
3. Completion of a health care setting-based training program in the performance of electrocardiographs and basic life support procedures including certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.
Special Note:
In addition to meeting the qualifications above, assignment to a long-term care facility requires a New York State Nurse's Aide Certificate
