The UnitedHealth Group (UHG) Enterprise Marketing Experiential Partners team is looking for a Director, UHG Strategic Programs and Events to help scale meetings and events strategies that enable meaningful connections with target audiences, deliver business results, and meet growth objectives. We are seeking a high energy, detailed-oriented team member who is a big thinker and is comfortable balancing many moving pieces at once, while working across multiple teams.

The Director, UHG Strategic Programs and Events will partner cross-functionally within a matrixed organization to lead and support key activities, programs and events supporting the growth and strategic direction of our enterprise. In this role, the individual will be responsible for partnering with different teams and stakeholders across all levels to gather and assess data, produce key deliverables, and facilitate discussions that will help inform strategic planning and decision making for enterprise-led programs and industry-related events. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for leading critical work in direct support of advancing the Enterprise Events Center of Excellence (ECOE) transformational priorities and helping build, mature, and expand the ECOE Strategy Team's capabilities.


This person must be a motivated self-starter with a solid attention to detail who is able to work both independently and collaboratively, be comfortable with ambiguity, make progress and move work forward with minimal guidance and oversight, establish effective working relationships across different teams, and have a positive attitude. This role requires creativity, flexibility, agility, and the ability to adapt to change while maintaining solid relationships with stakeholders in a highly cross-matrixed environment.

The Experiential Partners team supports programs and initiatives focused on delivering in-person and virtual experiences that champions growth and brand objectives. The Director, UHG Strategic Programs and Events will report up to the Vice President, Strategic Programs and Events, and be expected to play a leading role for a variety of initiatives, programs and events. Our current opportunity is based in Eden Prairie, MN, with flexibility to telecommute or work remotely.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams and leadership to build consensus and successfully lead and support strategic planning and delivery for a variety of enterprise strategic initiatives, programs and events
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including C-suite executives and matrixed business partners, to understand program and event requirements and goals in order to develop strategies and corresponding operational plans that are aligned with business objectives and maximize stakeholder experiences
  • Own and manage scheduling key meetings, developing meeting agendas, capturing detailed notes and action items, documenting key decisions, coordinating follow-ups and next steps, sending out communications, and organizing information and files
  • Provide project management support and oversight as needed for leadership on the team and / or within the organization
  • Deliver data-driven insights to support actionable strategic direction, business prioritization, and corresponding communications
  • Review existing data and metrics (and propose new metrics) to understand how we can better utilize existing program and event investments to reach relevant audiences
  • Research and assess relevant emerging trends; stay updated on industry news, emerging technologies, and innovative event practices to drive continuous improvement and innovation in event strategies
  • Provide support for recurring meetings such as monthly / quarterly business reviews, corporate requests, and special events
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities for the ECOE Events Strategy team and lead / support critical initiatives to support ECOE Strategy team advancement and maturity
  • Navigate a highly matrixed organization while supporting the Enterprise Marketing Experiential Partners Leadership team through creation of presentations, reports, and other ad hoc deliverables throughout the year

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in strategy, consulting, marketing, and / or program management
  • 5+ years of relevant experience owning, building, and delivering project work deliverables on time for complex initiatives and workstreams - examples include but are not limited to large-scale project plans and roadmaps, executive presentations and report-outs, project playbooks, industry and / or competitive analyses and reports, process maps, journey maps, business cases
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing senior-level presentations and reports; ability to communicate and present information to internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated experience developing strategies and corresponding project / operational plans
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing excellent consultative, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Project management experience, preferably in a matrix organization
  • Advanced level of proficiency in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)
  • Proven ability to craft storylines that engage executives and senior leaders on strategic and transformation priorities
  • Proven comfortable with ambiguity - able to apply structure frameworks to define and solve client and business needs / objectives
  • Willing or ability to travel up to 25%
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays as needs arise

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare industry experience
  • UnitedHealth Group business experience
  • Event industry management experience
  • Experience owning and delivering strategy projects from start to finish
  • Experience working in and successfully navigating a matrixed environment
  • Proven ability to drill down to the root cause of issues and be creative in problem solving
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams while demonstrating executive presence
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Proven ability to understand business models and their main levers, articulate business strategies and formulate concise solutions to complex problems
  • Proven excellent presentation, writing, and negotiation skills; ability to effectively tell a story and build a solid narrative through content creation
  • Proven analytical reasoning and solution-focus problem solving, hypothesis-based problem solving
  • Proven highly motivated and decisive individual who is self-directed yet works well in a team
  • Proven high EQ and solid relationship building skills

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $104,700 to $190,400 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
