Overview
The Lower School Assistant Teacher is charged with facilitating the work of the Lead Teacher and collaborating with the Lead Teacher to deliver the strongest education and experience possible for the students in the classroom. Reporting
Assistant Teachers report to the Lead Teacher and the Assistant Head of School.
Assistant Teachers work under the direction of the Lead Teacher to which he or she is assigned and under the direction of the Lower School Specialists, who often interact with the Assistant Teachers to facilitate assessments, data collection, and instruction of small groups.
Responsibilities
Though the Assistant Teacher's role is in essence a support role, it is important to note that the role is integral to ensuring the quality of a Gooden education. The Assistant will be charged with a range of tasks at the discretion of the Lead Teacher, with major areas of responsibility covering teaching small groups, collecting data and performing assessments, individualizing instruction, re-teaching as needed, substituting for the Lead Teacher in his or her absence, facilitating a positive classroom community, facilitating positive behavior management, counseling with students as daily issues related to social/behavioral/emotional situations arise, and helping to facilitate classroom routines and non-academic periods of the day.
It is expected and necessary that the Lead Teacher and Assistant Teacher are a positive and cohesive team. Though the Lead Teacher has ultimate responsibility regarding the classroom and students, the Assistant Teacher is expected to be a meaningful contributor to the classroom. He or she should work to establish a strong rapport and a sense of authority with the students. It is important that the Assistant Teacher defers to the Lead Teacher in the area of parent interactions.
The Assistant Teacher prepares for and leads small group activities as guided by the Lead Teacher. Rationale, materials, intensity/delivery of instruction, learning targets, schedules, and expectations for positive outcomes will be discussed by the Lead Teacher.
The Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in completing all academic and observational assessments. Training will be provided early in the school year so that all Assistants feel comfortable and competent within Gooden's system and community. Additionally, Lead Teachers and Lower School Specialists will communicate the rationale, strategy, and schedules for all assessments. This work will support the Lead Teacher in creating lessons that are productive for the individual needs of each student and will help the Lead Teacher prepare for all conferences and regular communication with parents. Assistant Teachers defer to the Lead Teacher for all communication that involves the academic or social progress of any student.
The Assistant Teacher is also charged with sharing the Lead Teacher's responsibilities of maintaining lunchtime decorum, helping students travel and transition to special classes, monitoring recess for safety and appropriate behaviors, keeping student materials organized, and maintaining all classroom displays. The Lead Teacher will regularly communicate expectations and specific needs in these areas for their mutual collegiality and efficiency.
The Assistant Teacher is expected to participate in professional development training activities and faculty meetings as directed by the Assistant Head, who will support each Assistant Teacher in defining his/her professional goals and in scheduling classroom observations or special training activities that support those goals.
As an equal member of the Gooden Faculty, the Assistant Teacher will share the responsibility of supporting the wider Gooden community. The Office Manager schedules specific duties such as early morning management of students or afternoon carpool duty. It is the responsibility of all Gooden faculty members to maintain the order and cleanliness of the classroom, hallways, and workroom areas and to be prepared to welcome the many guests who visit Gooden each day.
