Main purpose of the job:\r
\r
\r
A DJS Resident Advisor\r
Trainee is the entry level of work providing supervision and guidance to youths\r
residing in a facility operated by the Department of Juvenile Services. Guides,\r
directs, and organizes youth, while maintaining safety and security, care,\r
custody and program continuity in accordance with established DJS policies and\r
facility procedures. Perform a limited range of duties with some independence\r
at times and under close supervision at other times. Additionally, the purpose\r
of this position is to provide direct care coverage over a continuum of shifts.\r

POSITION DUTIES

The duties of this position\r
include, but are not limited to, the following:\r
Learns to escort groups of\r
youth to and from daily activities at the facility and to supervise their\r
conduct during movement and daily activities;\r
Learns to observe individual\r
and group behaviors and to determine when intervention or guidance is needed by\r
the youth under his/her care;\r
Learns to intervene in\r
situations involving agitated or overwrought youth to prevent fights and to\r
de-escalate potentially harmful behaviors,\r
Learns to suggest alternative\r
ways of reacting to problems, and may be required to physically restrain youth;\r
Learns to promote an\r
environment conducive to learning helpful alternative behaviors by encouraging\r
communication among youth and staff, guiding and critiquing group discussions,\r
offering advice at appropriate junctures and serving as a mentor and role model\r
for resident youth;\r
Learns to monitor the behavior\r
of youth and assist them in complying with daily and weekly schedules of\r
attending classes, completing school assignments, sleeping, eating and\r
performing personal hygiene tasks;\r
Learns to record behavior\r
observations, prepare progress and incident reports on assigned youth for\r
review by supervisors, and recommend behavioral sanctions;\r
Learns to inspect residence\r
areas for safety, security and cleanliness;\r
Learns to assess inappropriate\r
behaviors and recommend behavioral sanctions to supervisors;\r
Attends in-service training on\r
topics, such as crisis prevention, suicide prevention, emergency medical\r
treatments, and behavioral modification models to maintain knowledge of\r
childcare needs, counseling methods and trends in the juvenile justice field\r
and to obtain and maintain certification;\r
Learns to assess emergency and\r
crisis situations, make appropriate contacts and referrals, and provide interim\r
emergency medical and other assistance until specialized assistance is\r
available;\r
May be assigned to a cottage or\r
dormitory post at night;\r
May accompany youth to\r
community service activities outside the facility;\r
Performs other related duties.\r
When assigned to the Youth\r
Centers:\r
Learns to function as a member\r
of the treatment team for individual youth and provide input and information to\r
the DJS Case Management Specialist for inclusion in monthly progress reviews;\r
Learns to implement, help to\r
evaluate and recommend modifications to youth treatment plans;\r
Learns to facilitate daily\r
behavioral modification meetings in the absence of the DJS Case Management\r
Specialist.\r

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

\r
\r
Education:�\r
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school\r
equivalency certificate.\r
\r
Experience: None.\r
\r
Note: The above educational requirement is set by\r
the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the\r
Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.\r
\r

Employment\r
experience within the last 18 months�\r
Associate's Degree in a related field\r
(I.e., Criminal Justice, Social or Behavioral Sciences).\r

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.\r
Employees in this classification must complete and successfully pass\r
the�Entrance Level Correctional Training Course for DJS staff\r
required�for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate\r
during the�probationary period.\r
\r
2. Employees in this classification may be\r
assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees\r
assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's\r
license valid in the State of Maryland.\r

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1.\r
In accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209�of\r
the�Annotated Code of Maryland,�the Maryland Correctional Training\r
Commission shall establish the minimum qualifications for probationary or\r
permanent appointment of a Department of Juvenile Services employee in a\r
mandated position. These requirements are listed in detail in the Code of\r
Maryland Regulations , general regulations of the Maryland\r
Correctional Training Commission, and include:\r
\r
U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status\r
Must be at least 21years of age\r
A thorough background check, including\r
fingerprinting and drug testing\r
An oral interview, and\r
Physical and psychological examinations.\r
\r
2. Employees in this classification are subject to\r
substance abuse testing in�accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations\r
, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.\r

Once hired, Resident Advisors will be subject\r
to being on-call 24 hours a day and therefore must have a telephone at their\r
place of residence; Substance abuse testing; Once hired, Resident Advisors may\r
be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor\r
vehicle;��Employee assigned these duties will be required to possess\r
a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland; required to\r
operate large vans for transportation of youth; Employees assigned these duties\r
will be required to acquire a Class C Maryland driver's license.\r
